HSUS sends Alabama dogs to NC gassing facility, Lincoln County Animal Services

Alabama animal advocates, rescue organizations and the "animal community", in general, were surprised to read some disturbing headlines, "Thousands of local animals put to death, but (North Carolina) Lincoln County accepts dogs from Alabama". Incongruously, the news filtered down, not from Alabama news sources, but from North Carolina publications, for example;

The Gaston NC Gazette: "Humane Society of United States hopes to turn Alabama dogs into North Carolina pets", and  News at Norman, an online version of a Denver, NC based newspaper.

In early December, at least 10 dogs from a group of 44-50 dogs removed from a hoarding situation in an undisclosed location in Marshall County Alabama, were sent by the HSUS to Lincoln County Animal Services, (LCAS), Lincolnton, NC. - nationally ill-famed, in large measure, for the copious amount of documented reports for violations and substandard practices, such as:

Pregnant dogs and cats being put to death in LCAS Gas Chamber
Uncertified workers putting animals to death
Routinely violating state animal welfare laws

Inquiries to LCAS asertained that Murray, the little chow-mix dog pictured in the NC news reports, had already been "put down", as well as Harry, a black Labrador Retriever and another dog given no name, simply ID number, 38805 - no photo, no note of his existence. LCAS Kay Hice stated that some of the dogs were being transferred to Charlotte Animal Control and four had been placed at Charlotte Humane Society.

Calls to HSUS went unanswered, but a concerned Alabama animal rescuer, Tammy Mooreland, spoke with AL HSUS Rep Mindy Gilbert today:

Gilbert confirmed that she assisted other rescue groups in removing the dogs from a woman in Marshall County, and explained that the reason for no publicity was to "protect the hoarder's privacy." Gilbert added, "Due to recent controversy raised about LCAS, we have asked other NC agencies to take some of the dogs."

Mooreland commented, "I asked if she, or anyone with HSUS, was tracking the dogs' outcome. She didn't really respond to that question. However, she did say that she was always happy to answer any questions from Alabama animal advocates, so she can dispel any rumors or misinformation." (mgilbert@humanesociety.org)

This reporter verified, with some certainty, despite the scant information offered by Officer J. Smith, Charlotte Animal Control, that the dogs, Daisy a black female Lab-Retriever mix and a black male Lab-Retriever mix with no name, A797514, are impounded at that facility. Smith stated they are not up for adoption, but are in the "holding section". If other Alabama dogs are there, they would have to be identified among the countless photos of dogs needing homes on their website.

The remaining dogs removed from Marshall County - number unconfirmed? Their whereabouts are unknown.

There appears to be an overwhelming number of unconfirmed facts surrounding this unpublicized, seemingly surreptitious, scattering of Alabama dogs in need of home and refuge carried out, assisted or decided by HSUS.

These facts are clear: Murray, Harry and No. 38805 have been killed in Lincoln County Animal Services, a gas chamber facility in NC. Daisy and No. A797514 sit in the unadoptable section of Charlotte Animal Control facility, and wait for someone to come for them.

I know Sandra that each dog which is euthanized causes you great pain. I can only say that if the HSUS was complicit in causing their deaths - it is terribly sad. Is it wrong? I have no idea because no humane group can take care of all the millions of dogs born as a result of irresponsible people. That we in the 21st century haven't addressed this problem better is distressing to say the least. Alex Pacheco is working with a group of physicians in trying to find a non-surgical means of altering dogs. His program I believe is called 6 Million Dogs Need You. Yes, I have given 2 small donations. Of course the work needs a lot of money. Sadly we are remiss in this area as we are in altering our pets. I don't think any humane society can take care of all these animals bred so irresponsibly. I hope that every time you post you will ask people to make sure they neuter and spay their animals, but I guess you realize that the people who read your compassionate posts already know that.. I thank God that out of the 30+ cats and 7 dogs I have had over the years -NONE of them have given birth.

Does Sandra Nathan have any solution to this problem?

    Does ANYONE have a solution?

Animals are euthanized because shelters have no money .

Municipal shelters have no money because local taxpayers do not want to give them any.

Does anyone know what it costs to humanely maintain an animal per year?

What does your own pet cost?

    Multiply that by 8 million.

That is for only one year.

    Who will pay for this?

    Do the math.

    Who will pay for this?

Terry Ward, you have missed the point completely. HSUS took credit for "rescuing" the animals from a hoarder and knowing how HSUS works most certainly got major publicity for doing so then collected donations.
After the donations and publicity they dumped them in shetlers and even worse shelters who kill by inhumane means.

How much does it cost to enact a federal law to mandate all pets be spayed and neutered? All of them. Since we as a people can't seem to figure out that we need to stop making more dogs, our government needs to regulate it.

How much does it cost to enact federal legislation that ALL breeders must apply for a license with the government that costs, oh, around $75k, or maybe $100k? (By the way, that's still, on average, less than the cost of opening up any other small business.) Think of how 99% of breeders (both reputable and disreputable) would go into another line of work, and how many shelters could be drastically improved with those proceeds.

And those that just HAVE to have a designer dog? They'll have to settle for some other "object," that will make them feel better about themselves, and we can finally stop feeding the monster. Those that weren't sure if they wanted to go to a breeder or the shelter/rescue will now have no other option. Dogs stop getting made and more dogs get adopted from shelters or rescues.

And I really don't care about "what about people that want a certain breed?"vThis is not food or shelter. It's not about access to clean water or healthcare. This is a "like to have" not a "have to have," and for the luxury of a "like to have," 6 million dogs are being killed in shelters every year, some horribly and torturously, in gas chambers, so all of us can have access to designer, inbred dogs.

Can't believe how backwards our priorities are.

  • Hasn't the HSUS supposedly spoken out against gassing? Yet they would take animals taken from a hoarding situation and deposit them at a gassing facility? Maybe they should take the $50,000 "bribe" the received from the Eagles in an effort to get the HSUS to support Michael Vick's claim that he wants to adopt a dog.

Is it just me, or is the HSUS constantly acting contrary to what they should be? I realize that there are more dogs than people to adopt them, but to take the dogs from a hoarding situation and leave them to die in the most painful and horrendous method - in a gas chamber - tells me that they honestly don't care about the animals. Are the dogs better off dead than being in the hoarding situation? Sadly, possibly yes. BUT, there is NO excuse for the animals to have suffered in a gas chamber. EBI should be the ONLY method of euthanasia used in the US. And, the HSUS should be heading the campaign for the elimination of gas chambers in shelters across the country!

  • I have a crazy idea. Why don't southerners spay/neuter like we do in New England? Does HSUS have to transport all these animals up north with everytime like they did with the massive pit bull rescue in Ohio?

Clean up your act down there and stop blaming HSUS!

I'm with a non-profit that offers low-cost or no-cost spay/neuter services in FL and I can tell you that the majority of people get their animals fixed here just as they do in the oh-so-enlightened North, but there are always going to be those who don't care, regardless of where they live. HSUS is collecting millions of dollars in donations and acting as though THEY are rescuing these animals when in fact they're moving them along down the chain with apparent little regard for the outcome. That's the point of the article. Oy.

There are those of us who have been trying for years to make that a reality but the "good ol' boys" who value testicles as much as football continue to be elected, so the s/n effort is like pushing a boulder up a hill. We FINALLY have a couple legislators who are stepping up to the plate for us on animal legislation, so we are very grateful for them and thankful to have others, like yourself, in other parts of the

Hey Stop - thanks for being the Scrooge to the Christmas party. HSUS is currently sitting on nearly $200 million dollars. If the best they can do with a couple dozen seized dogs is gas them, then they need to get out of the animal charity business. Oops, I forgot, they are NOT in the animal charity business - they are far more interested in lobbying to make pet ownership more difficult, more expensive and less fun.

Shelters that actually care about animals do this every day. They make a seizure, they advertise the animals, they place the animals. Only you and your heartless hangers on would excuse HSUS once again for convenience killing animals. But then you and HSUS support dog-killer extraordinare Michael Vick. So you not caring that these dogs are dead does not surprise me.

  • i'll have to put my comments in a bunch of additions. Here goes:
How could I not comment. There's so much misinformation here. Hey, Terry Ward, Sandra Nathan is a COLUMNIST, not a vet, not a lobbyist, not a member of any society. Columnists report. That's their job - not to find solutions. You obviously have not volunteered or worked in a shelter. Many shelters have LOTS of money and LOTS of space. Depends where you're talking about. Among other reasons, animals are euthanized because many people are useless bags of garbage and decide when a pet gets too old or sick, or they want to travel, or it doesn't match the decor, or they just don't want to bother, they take it to their local killshelter and say 'here, i don't want her anymore". Or they lie and say the dog is a biter, which is an instant death sentence.

Here's a solution - stop allowing breeders to breed their animals every single year. Put a LIMIT on how many times a dog/cat can shoot out a newborn. Make BREEDERS pay a FEE to their local rescue. They're taking in cold hard cash and you know they're not declaring most of it. The AKC is a humongous money-making organization. I think they can afford to supplement their local shelters.

Here's another solution - for every store that sells animals they've gotten from a puppymill, have them PAY A FEE to their local rescue. They must make 10x on each dog what they pay for the dog.

    Lisa you are an idiot.

I don't know what magical part of the country you come from but in my neck of the woods there is no shelter that has lots of money and lots of space. We just make good use of what little money and what little space we have. But keep spinning the HSUS party line please, it just shows that you know absolutely nothing about sheltering.

  • BTW, your tax dollars DO go to municipal shelters. However, most people don't even know that animal shelters exist in their neighborhoods.

One ignorant person dealt with here - how about another...

StopHUMANEWATCH - why in the heck do you think southerners don't s/n? City-run shelters in FL are mandated to s/n every animal that comes out of there, unless it goes to a rescue. And responsible rescues are supposed to s/n, though i do know for a fact there are lots of crappy ones who don't., even in FL, but that's another hill of worms.

and hey, Humanewatcher - Stop floating the crap - The HSUS has zero intention of making pet ownership less possible. Stop spinning the garbage. It just doesn't fly. However, the HSUS would have been better off taking the $50K and FORCING Vick the dick to say "because i'm an ass, i can NEVER own an animal again". That's what the law does with hoarders or abusers who don't happen to be football personalities. Why does Vick get special treatment? because the Eagles want people to stop hating their "star" and start buying more tickets. That $50K donation will get put back into the pockets of the Eagles damn fast.

Hey Lisa, stop floating the crap? HSUS kills animals, just like they did with these dogs, just like they did in Wilkes County, just like they tried to do with Vick's dogs. That is not spin, that's a fact. HSUS didn't give a rat's patootie what happened to these dogs. HSUS has demonstrated over and over again that it only cares about the animals it can use to raise money. HSUS collects about $100 million a year from misguided animal lovers and they couldn't spare enough money to advertise these particular dogs and get them adopted out. Pathetic. Our shelter - which gets NO money from HSUS - seized 200+ dogs from a local puppy mill and had them all adopted into good homes inside of two weeks. Now you're making excuses for HSUS, with it's money and reach and inability to find homes for a few dozen dogs. Just plain lazy on HSUS's part, just plain lazy thinking on your part.

With regards to Vick, we began working with him before he got signed to the Eagles, and long before we and other groups received the 50k grants. Though not ordered by the courts, Vick is continuing with his counseling and with his End Dogfighting work. As Wayne has said on several media outlets, we are not promoting him getting a pet, and he should not (and cannot) get one now. The decision he’ll make about a pet will happen down the line, after his parole ends. Wayne goes more into detail on Anderson Cooper: http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/us/2010/12/20/ac.vick.dog.owners...

So SarahHSUS, when Michael Vick told a group of school kids that he would still be fighting dogs if he hadn't been caught, is that part of HSUSs plan for his evaluation? Dog fighting in Philadelphia has INCREASED since Vick returned to the NFL. Vick has been full of excuses about how this has affected him, but not a single sincere word about how or even if he's sorry about the brutality he committed on these dogs.

As to whatever Wayne had to say on Anderson Cooper, the link you provided went to coverage of a snowstorm, and there was no "Anderson Cooper" "Wayne Pacelle" video I could find through the CNN search engine.

The fact is that it often takes getting caught to stop a criminal. As with any high profile cruelty case, awareness of the issue continues to increase. We have seen the positive effect these talks have had on the kids there - you and me both know dogfighting is wrong, but many at risk kids don't, and we have to remember Vick was one of those kids a long time ago. Perhaps if someone had reached out and gotten the message to him, he wouldn't have gotten into it to begin with.

  • Here's some folks I agree with:

Suzanna - I'd love to hear more about the progam you're referring to. I'll check out the website - it's the first i've heard of it and i deal with a number of organizations here that would love to hear more as well - thanks for the tip!

Urdchan - i agree with you 99%. I'm ok with the $50K bribe they got from the Eagles. However, Vick the dick has actually stated that once his "penance" with the HSUS is done, he's never going to talk about what he did, ever again. So who's looking like the idiots - the HSUS, of course.

MsAlabama - thanks - you're not alone in the fight. Here in Otown, we do it every single day.

Finally, for the HSUS - more spinning of CRAP! I work in real hard news - and we DO put out the names of hoarders and animal abusers. Hey, we even publish their photos so other rescues/shelters can BEWARE of them. That HSUS Rep, Mindy Gilbert, had an obvious ulterior motive - to protect the HSUS.

So, finally, i decided the HSUS is not getting a penny more from me until they either give back the $50K or make Mr. Vick say "I'm an ass and can't own anymore pets in my lifetime because i kill them for fun".

We need to pass S/N laws ACROSS the U.S and enforce it. Breeders should be only allowed to breed ONLY if the type of animal they breed IS NOT dying in a shelter and each breeder should be given a microchip number specific to them and each puppy/kitten they breed gets chipped with this number and s/n before it is sold. Should that puppy/kitten/cat/dog end up in a shelter the breeder is contacted and given the option to take the kid back if they don't want the animal they pay the cost of the shelter (or rescue) to board the animal until it is adopted once adopted they no longer pay the fees. ALL puppy mills should be shut down as they do NOTHING but cause misery for the animals as they live in horrid conditions and are not cared for , the same goes for Back Yard Breeders. The money saved from not having to euthanize millions of animals a year will help Police the Breeders to be sure they are complying.

And they are dependent upon tax money.
    Which means they get zip.
They are roach motels for pets/
Go spend some time in the NYCACC.
They take in 38, 000 animals a year.
    That's THIRTY EIGHT THOUSAND ANIMALS!

I work at the HSUS and would like to make a few clarifications. I understand that this issue is extremely passionate - but here are the facts. The 44 chow x retriever dogs in the back yard were unsocial, inbred, unvetted, unaltered and although were being provided with food and water to the best of the owner abilities, were in fact injuring and killing each other. They were loose in a large fenced area and had developed true pack behavior. The dogs were surrendered and we had them heartworm checked, vaccinated, wormed, frontlined and health certificates issued for them to be transported to adoption programs

  • Sarah 1 year ago

Some of the dogs went to a humane society and to a rescue group in Nashville, some went to a rescue group in Georgia and 10 went to the shelter in NC. The NC shelter is large, clean and has a large volunteer base. They have worked closely in the past with our NC State Director. The dogs are walked every day by volunteers. Since we knew that these dogs needed a lot of socialization, we appreciated their offer to help. They also placed slightly over 1,000 animals last year through their rescue contacts. It is our understanding that one of the dogs bit a caregiver and one shut down and was not responding to care. Since there have now been allegations of wrongdoing at the shelter, the dogs have been moved. We cannot substantiate any of the allegations, however.

We placed the dogs with adoption partners that were willing to give this difficult population of dogs a chance at being adopted. If you are with a shelter or rescue that wants to help in the future, you can find out more about our Emergency Shelter Placement Partner program at http://www.animalsheltering.org/espp

Why would HSUS spend money caring for dogs that may not be adoption candidates and may require euthanasia for behavioral reasons?

----- There was never confirmation of the disease outbreak and only a few were actually documented as ill- Many people believe they were Katrina/Rita animals and this was a quick and sneaky way HSUS could dispose of them. If pet owners would spay/neuter their pets the population would go way down. There would not be as many living & dieing in shelters daily . Stop buying your pets from pet stores that get supplied from puppy mills, adopt from a shelter or foster a animal that needs your help. How about making it mandatory that people get screened by a vet or someone who rescues animals before allowing them to adopt. We make people jump thru hoops to adopt a child .In my eyes adopting a pet is close enough to adopting a child or it should be. Be a good pet owner. Love ,care for and treat the animals with kindness. If you are not ready to be a parent - DON'T. The only ones that suffer are the kids or pets. Quite complaining about this or that. Do something to change the way things are. Stand up for your ideas. Make the lawmakers change the laws. Be proactive. Report abuse, rescue a animal in need, volunteer at a shelter, foster a pet, donate to a animal facility. HELP INSTEAD OF COMPLAINING. And one last thought- I live in the South, and all my animals have been spayed & or neutered.

Whew! Bringing these incidents to the attention of the public is a critically important step in solving the problems in the sheltering industry.

For those interested, here is our official statement on the matter:

As with any of the cases where HSUS helps facilitate placement of rescued animals, these dogs were transported to a few of our Emergency Shelter Placement Partners - sheltering organizations that will provide for their care and placement. These dogs came from a terrible hoarding situation where 44 chow retriever crosses were found in a back yard. They were unsocial, inbred, unvetted, unaltered and although they were being provided with food and water to the best of the owner abilities, were in fact injuring and killing each other. They were loose in a large fenced area and had developed true pack behavior. There is no animal shelter in Marshall County, and we worked with our placement partners to place these dogs with adoption agencies that were willing to give this difficult population of dogs a chance at finding an appropriate, loving home

Some of the dogs went to a humane society and to a rescue group in Nashville, some went to a rescue group in Georgia and ten went to the shelter in NC. The ten dogs that went to North Carolina were initially placed in a shelter in Lincoln County. The Lincoln County shelter is large, clean and has a large volunteer base. They placed slightly over 1,000 animals last year through their rescue contacts. The dogs are walked every day by volunteers, and since we knew that these dogs needed a lot of socialization, we appreciated their help. When dogs from a rescue are brought to an animal shelter, it brings more publicity for that shelter, more support from the local community, and more people walking through the shelter doors. It helps all the dogs and cats at the shelter who are now more likely to be adopted because of the increased publicity and community support, not only the dogs who came from the rescue.

As a precaution, when allegations of wrongdoing at the shelter surfaced, the remaining six dogs were moved to other shelters in North Carolina. However, we cannot substantiate any of those allegations. The Lincoln County Shelter has also committed to stopping the using the gas chamber as a method of euthanasia, and we applaud that decision and have offered to assist in the cost of removing it from the shelter. We are also working on legislation to ban the use of gas chambers as a method of euthanasia in the state of Alabama, and hope to enable more shelters to make that switch in the coming year.

We are following up on these dogs and will continue to do so as they are cared for and adopted out. We are currently reviewing our Emergency Shelter Placement Partner program and encourage any shelters or rescues that are equipped to work with animals from cruelty and neglect cases to find out more about the program and fill out an application at www.animalsheltering.org/espp

HSUS does this crap ALL the time. We had a local hoarding/cruelty case in NC and dozens of groups stepped up to help the animals but HSUS was in charge and told everyone that everything was all good and that the dogs were all going to great rescues. Meanwhile I know for a fact that some were at local vet hospitals and some were at my local high kill gassing shelter where many of the dogs were gassed to death. Yes, there were rescues who gladly would've taken these dogs that truly deserved a second chance but no HSUS didn't care about that. They wanted the publicity and the fame and they didn't care about what happened to those dogs. VERY VERY SAD!!! They were some great dogs!

And, said Good 'Ol Boys, who call themselves "Christians," say that animals don't have souls (they get this info. from their special bibles), and throw their dogs out 24-7 in the heat and cold to suffer, too! Ignorance is rampant here in the South--and education exists only to supports the teams!
