Job vacancies, but one must be Muslim to apply
As Albanians debate whether they should remain a member of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), which Albania joined in 1992, the government of Albania continue to endorse the discriminatory job policy of the OIC.
The OIC website posts job vacancies continuously within its headquarters in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, www.oic-oci.org. Currently, the OIC is looking to hire Political Officers, and the general requirements, iter alia, state that a candidate for this job must be “ A Muslim national of one of the OIC Member States, and not to hold a dual nationality with a non-Member state. If married, the spouse must be Muslim.”
An Albanian satisfies the first part of this requirement. However, most Albanians would not qualify for this job because of the religious requirement part.
According to a non-scientific surveys conducted in Albania, 65% of Albanians identify themselves as atheists, Catholics, Orthodox, Protestant, or of a mixed religion, as their parents may be of different religious background. Only 35% identify themselves as Muslim. According to the OIC’s job requirements, none of these Albanians, i.e., 65% of the population, would qualify to hold a position within the OIC. Yet, Albania continues to remain a member of the OIC knowing fully well of this discriminatory policy against non-Muslims, and even endorses such policies.
When contacted the Albania’s Permanent Representative to the UN, 212-249-2059, he stated that he was aware of this discriminatory policy of the OIC, but did not know “why Albanian does not protest it. However, personally, I don’t mind it.” He referred us to the Albanian Embassy in Saudi Arabia, which also represents Albania at the OIC, and when we contacted them at 966-14-704-217, they stated that the Saudis determine job requirements for the OIC, and, “we, the other Member States, just approve it.” They then referred us to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Albania, 011-355-4-364-090, who informed us that the “Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, got us in there and we have nothing to do with it,” and referred us to Prime Minister’s Office in Tirana, 011-355-422-50474, who, when contacted, stated that “We have known of the OIC’s policy since we joined in 1992, but we just agreed with it since most Albanians are Muslim, and we don’t think that non-Muslims would like to work in Saudi Arabia or OIC , anyway.”
We wonder if the European Union, which Albania aspires to join, has a policy which states that only Christians may apply for a job within the European Union Commissions, how long would it take for Albania to complain, and rightfully so, of Islamophobia? But when it comes to the OIC’s religious discriminatory policies, Albania endorses them.

When ignorant uneducated people get write whatever comes in their mind..you get articles like this
Albania, should not be part of the OIC. It is a European Nation. The members of the Albanian Nation that want to be part of the OIC should move to Turkey or Saudi Arabia as they do not belong in Europe. They gave up their European heritage when they decided to join the "East" culturally.
Addy, we may disagree with the author, but accusing him of being uneducated, please, look at the way you write. Fore one, I happened to be married to a Catholic and I checked the OIC's website to see if this author is referring to the truth, and I saw it with my own eyes that the OIC's requirements for job openings are as indicated in this article. Look, the author provided all the telephone numbers of the people that he reached to verify the facts. Therefore, anyone of us can call up those numbers and verify what he wrote here. I believe that Albania should leave the OIC because we have nothing in common with the Arab League.
I know Mr. Lumaj. He is full oh hate. He hate Albanins and he dont like Berisha and it is this why he write because he hates us. I thing he is in trouble mentall and is tring to mkae name for him. Albanins shuld sue him and tell him to shut up and not tell us what we do
Mr. Lumaj- Djali Shkrelit is one who party the Christian Democrats are a bunch of "Komunista" who berisha does not align with then he spews out senseless articles about religion to stir up things which is very dangerous and despicible in his part.
I am Catholic and as far as the OIC is concerned I think if anything is a positive. Albania is only a member nothin more or less. We don't head the organization or we don't participate any further than attending the conference once a year.
Mr. Lumaj and his sponsors are wasting their time and our time with tthis baseless article. The whole world knows that Albania does not support at all extreme religious views of any country no matter if it belongs to the Islamic Organization, or not. Being part of any organization does not mean that one agrees with all views presented in that organization, otherwise none would exist. To claim that "Albania endorses discrimination of non-muslims" is ridiculous on Mr. Lumaj's part. Instead, Mr. Pjerin Lumaj, a fellow Albanian and an extremist of the Catholic religion, should focus more on the religious harmony and tolerance that exists in Albania as a perfect example for the rest of the world. It is a shame that such ridiculous and baseless articles, like this one, written by individuals who always want to advance their personal agenda by stepping on their own people, find space and ink in prestigious news sources like Examiner.com.
Lumaj is the most ignorant being out there. He knows Albania does not discriminate against non-Muslims, but he is writing these articles on the behalf of the Serbs and Greeks. And as for as Europe discriminating angainst the Muslims, please, Mr. Lumaj! You know that the only resaon why we are not in the EU is our religion. If we ere Catholics or Orthodox, we would have been in the EU long time ago. Look, the EU will allow Serbia, Macedonia, and Montengro, to join soon. But Albania, Kosova, and Bosnia will never be allowed to join because of their Muslism faith. They, the Christian Europeans, will soon isolate us, Albanians. Starting in January 2010, all Albanians will be requiret to have visas to visit even the countries I mentioned above. So don't tell us how we would feel if Europe discriminated against us. We are feeling that discrimination as I write this coment.
To Arben Berisha,
Berisha, you claim that Albania is tolerant. How come then that for the past 60 years we have not seen an Albanian Catholic hold any important positions in Albania? Look Sali Berisha has no Catholics in his government. So it is easy for you to tolerate us, because you are the ones oppressing us. But how long can we tolerate your discrimination against us?
Does anyone know this anti-Albanian? He knows that we are a Muslim nation and tries to deny it? Albanians are Muslim you moron! And as far as non-muslims go, they can leave Albania if they want to. One should know that when we join Kosova, parts of Macedonia, parts of Montenegro, and Chamria, we will form the Great Albania and the world will respect us because we will be the largest Muslim Country in Europe. So Lumaj and his ilk should get ready to leave just like the Serbs and Greeks. Albania belongs to us, not to the catholics, Serbs or Greeks.
Mali i Kelemdit,
Look, it is nothing wrong with reciting the facts as they are. It is true that a non-Muslim cannot get a job with the OIC. It is also true that his his wife is non-Muslim he will be disqualified for the job. But, my question is this: How would the OIC verify one's Muslim religion? Check if he is circumcized? Bring a letter from the imam? or take a picture with Bin Laden. It is a shame that we, as Albanians, have to deal with this issue. ALBANIA should get out of this OIC deal.
Lumaj, I checked the website on the OIC, and it is true. Now I am beginning to respect you because you are writing the truth, which may hurt, but it still is the truth.
Lumaj does not want to accept that Muslims are discriminated on daily bases in the USA only because they are Muslim and nothing else. Every time something crazy happens, the Americans blame it on Muslims. He knows this but is scared to write about it.
This guy is funny. Love him. I was going to date and Albanian-American, who was Muslim. He told me that his name is Jack, but then when he met with his friends, his name changed to Xhevat. That is when I knew he was Muslim. I dropped him like a brick. And boy did I do the right thing
I dont think we should be in OIC, because we have nothing in common with arab nations,we are tolerant people and they are extremists as simple as that, and we are europeans, anyone denying it?
This is a good start to begin a campaign in Albania to get us out of the OIC. We should get out of it as soon as possible. Untill then, we will kisss EU googbye. Kosovars are smarter than us. They refuse to join the OIC. And because of their refusal to join the OIC, the world is supporting them, and even though Albanian-Muslims have submitted 50000 signature petition to the OIC to recognize Kosovo, OIC refuses to do that because Kosova said we will not join you. Good for the Kosovar leadership
mr. Lumaj the oic is a organisation for countries that have a muslim population and in fact oic stand for Organisation of The Islamic Conference, the EU is something different, it refers more to a continet than to a particular characteristic of a specific country. Is just like the African Union. In fact a EU member cannot be a country that is not part of the european continent. So mister you're doing some confusions. You know very well why albania is part of the Oic, first to help Kosova and second to have some financial aid. After all a lot of Eu members countries are moving forward to develope relations with muslim countries, instead why we have to be afraid to develope our relations with these countries. The world is becoming every day smaller and interdependent to each other so it's normal to have relations with everyone regardless ot it's religion or ethnicity. You admitted it by yourself tha the majority of us are atheist, or mixed. So why so much noise for nothing. It's politics.
Koko
If finding out that the guy was "Muslim" was your only reason, then it only indicates your ignorance and nothing else. Even Albanians that identify themselves as Muslim are miles away from your average Middle Eastern variety. Still, whatever floats your boat.
I've read other articles from this Lumaj dude. Most are BS. In this one though, he may have a point. Albania does not need to be part of that organization.
I would call on all the Albanian-Americans to contact NAAC and speak with Avni Mustafaj at 202-557-6865 to file a lawsuit against this author for defaming Albania. Further, we should contact Voice of America and speak with Arben Xhixho 202-382-5495 to expose this anti-Albania for what he is. I believe that he is a Serb or a Greek who is trying to distabalize Albania by defaming us.
Ment,
He had told me that he was a Christian and I believed him. But then the truth came out and scary pictures of Muslim fundamentalists appeared to me and I had to let him go. But anyway, I think that Lumaj is doing us a service because we are talking about things that bother us all. Bye Ment. See you ta the Albanian parties. I would be the cute one. I hope you are a cutie too.
As Albanians, we are confused. We want to be in EU, but make relations with the OIC. We want to be pro-America, but we give refuge to terrorists. We want to join the OIC, but move towards EU. We have to make up our mind as to what we want to be. I think that we as Albanins should convert to Christianity, which was our firts religion, join EU, and to hel with the rest. We are Europeans. We have been in Europe for thousands of years, before most of peoples of Europe came to reside there. So how come we are still trying to establish an identity. We have it. It is Christianity. Lets embrase it.
I forgot to add that even in Eu you have some discriminations, if you are not an EU citizens. Regarding jobs, pensions free movement and other rights. So mister Lumaj every organizations has a privileged attitude for it's members country citizens. Now please deal with this and stop righting non sense. At least try, I know for you must be hard to not right non sense. Why don't you ask to mis. Topally the Speaker of our parliament that is catholic what she thinks about your accusations?? Maybe you'll have a hearing with her.Anyway why the majority of the catholics voted for Berisha(muslim), maybe because they are smarter than you or perhaps they are more stupid than you. If you have interesant arguments why don't you come to albania for a public debate. We are a democratic country we accepts everyone, even the most stupid one.
A non issue. Mozambique, Guyana, Suriname and even Russia and the Phillippines wants to be member of the OIC and you Albanians are complaining making this an issue. Read and learn more about the activities and nature of the OIC before you speak from ignorance. Yes, soon when another war starts , you will run to Saudi, Iran, Pakistan, Jordan, UAE, KUwait, Bahrain, or Qatar for assistance. Know who your friends are or do you even know who you are?
Robi,
Get an education first please before you spew hate. Arabs are only 25% of the OIC.
Bosnia and Kosovo have so much in common and love for Europe and they deny you life, liberty and justice. Another Slovodan is coming and dont run to the "Muslims" again. Am not an Arab but dont generalize them.
just OK Pjerin. Albania must deal between EU and Islamic conference. I think this is the argument that No way to Europe (Albania and Bosnia).
to Joe
Maybe because you're not albanian and don't know nothing about Albania that's why you make some statements. We don't make any diffirence between muslim or christian albanian. We're all albanian. For your information the speaker of our parl. is catholic. But anyway is disturbing to see albanian according to their religion, we don't do it. It's not albanian to do that, we don't care of someone faith, he or she can be what ever he or she likes. OK??
KOKO
Your comment? what does it have to do with this article O.o?
" Who we were, Who we are and Who we want to be"
Since the birth of Christ we were Christians. Then 500 years ago Turks invaded our country. Our people fought them for 500 years. We won independence but some lost their religion.
Are we all Albanians today? I really ask myself because we might have Turkey left-overs. Every one of us who truly believes is Albanian should remember that our predecessors last their life for our country, our people, our values, our religion.
Don't forget the promise of our previews generation "premtimin e te parve tone". Be Albanian not Turk.
In the communist era people used to ask are you "turk a i kshtene?"
"Turk" meaning being turkish Muslim and "kshtene" being Albanian Christian.
Personally I have witnessed a lot of Albanians converting back to Christianity.
Give-up the dust of 500 years muslim occupation.
Be smart, Be patriot, Be Albanian.
Albanian wants you back.
Ray says:
Yes, soon when another war starts , you will run to Saudi, Iran, Pakistan, Jordan, UAE, KUwait, Bahrain, or Qatar for assistance. Know who your friends are or do you even know who you are?
Common man if it wasn't for Usa and some Eu countries Kosovo will be suffering terribly and for Bosnia too is the same. I respect the muslim country that have helped kosovo, but there are lot of them who coudn't care more of balkan muslim. In fact they support the muslim butchers of the balkans the serbs. So the islamic world is complexs and not united at all.
Why is this Lumaj fella spewing such irrelevant doctrines when it comes to a subject oriented organization such as the OIC. Lazy attempts at journalism or assed around scholarly research will not necessarily win you hearts and minds, if that is the case, or a country's redirection of its policies. The fact of the matter is that all states have their own interests in mind and thus act accordingly. OIC is an organization with its own bureaucracy and hence its own rules about running its own affairs.
Must we bail out of the World Bank because its president can only be a US citizen? Lumaj, nice try, but make sure you check in with a psychiatrist first before interfering with grown ups.
Who care about religion.WE ARE ALBANIANSSS
KoKo
Fair enough...something's shady when you have to lie about that. I still believe it was a case of "trying to get the cutie" rather than hide the "fundamentalism." Anyway... :).
Ray
The "About" page of the OIC does say a few nice things... and a few shady things too... I mean defend the true image of Islam from defamation? Based on whose definition of Islam? Saudi Arabia's?
I'm sure there are a lot of moderate Muslim countries out there, but the Arab ones seem to have most of the money (and the pulling of the strings that go with it) and often they don't use it for constructive purposes. Rather, they seem to keep on building mosques and minarets everywhere, rip on Israel on every chance they have...because let's face it, that's exactly what poor/underdeveloped countries need.
Bossi,
It is true that the Speaker of the Albanian Parliament is Roman Catholic. Her name is Jozefina Topalli. But she is just a speaker! She speaks when sali Berisha tells her. The Speaker is not a member of the Cabinet. The Cabinet has 14 Minister, non of them Roman catholics. And the reason why Topalli is the Speaker is for Berisha's benefit, to put a Catholic to deal with the dignitaries. And as far as Albania being a democracy, please get real. Just because we do not live there, it doesn not mean we do not visit. Remeber what happned to Azem Hajdari, Pjter Arbori, Dode Kaci, Mr. Kastarit from Kukes, Aleksandr Keka, Fatmir Gjini, Kosta Trebeca, Bashkim Gazidede, etc., who all got killed during the Berisha rukle in some sort of misteriou way. So, please get real. We have problems and is nothing wrong with debating them.
Trite, as always.
Lumaj, it's called OIC! "I" stands for Islamic, not for laic, not secular and not gentile. Since it involves Islam, it definitely involves religion, automatically. You can't possibly in a clear state of mind, take EU as a counterexample. EU stands for European Union, and nowhere is it anyway connected to any religions. It's just like reproaching Italy for not hiring a Brazilian soccer player with their national team, just because a Brazilian is not an Italian!!! Is that discriminatory? Well, yes it is all day long. (read more on the definition of "discrimination")
Just in case Mr Lumaj... I believe the US has over 5 military installations in Saudi Arabia. One of which is very huge indeed. No bases in Albania whatsoever. Does that mean we are terrorists and the Saudis are Christians?
Ridiculous article, as always; pointless, aimless, but of course, defamatory and full of grudges. As much as I despise Berisha, I got to hand it to you... this time was loathsome!
Aurela,
Before we were Albanians were were Catholics. Lets not forget that. I am a Muslism, but 6 generations agao, were were Catholics from Mirdita. We fled Albania for blood fueds and ended up in Kosova, where we convertet to Islam. But the trurh is that we were all Catholics before Turky invaded us. I think we should sue Turky for the harm that they caused us, forced conversion.
Zotrules,
Lumaj is not admonishing the OIC for its requirements to hire someone. He is asking Albania why does it aggree with such requirements when in Albania we have people like you, Evengelist, and others, who foprm the majority of the population. The people of Albania are against being in the OIC, but the government of sali Berisha, who are non Catholics, are pro it. Why?
I cannot believe that our representative to the UN said that "Personally I dont' mind it". I called them up and spoke with an Andi, who confirmed to me that Lumaj called him and that he did tell Lumaj jut that, but Luimaj promissed not to quote him. Andi is Muslism himself and that is why he sees no proplems with what the OIC requires for a job. Shame on Albania for appointing people like Andi to represent us!
Google News Alert for: Albania
Saudi government interested to boost investment in Albania.
ISI - Emerging Markets
Saudi Arabian state Fund for Development (SFD) expressed interest to expand investments in the country, fund's executive director Jusuf Al Bassam declared ...Why? Why? Why the Saudis? We must stop them
Avokati... Yes, I am indeed an evangelist. Thanks for reminding me that. I surely can't forget it, but I can't forget that a huge chunk of my people still have different convictions and beliefs. What do you do with people like that? People you know, people you love, people who love you, people, who you cherish everything good in life with? Yes, some of them dare declare they're Muslims... so?
We're even "striving" to enter the EU! Can anyone deny the hatred, persecution and the despicable racial discrimination we Albanians are enduring everyday in the EU, the way they treat us everyday, the way they treat over a million of Albanians in EU and over 5 million of other Albanians in the Balkans??? Every single day of God we are being discriminated upon by the EU, because of race, religion, culture. Every single day! We still want to join them! Can you say we are doing the wrong thing?
This guy is a complete idiot. He hates Albania and Albanians. I called the Office of the Prime Minister and spoke directly with Mr. Berisha, as he is a good friend of mine, and he told me that some reporter from Examiner has contacted him about the OIC and that he had no time for him and had to ask him to call back. Lumaj never obtained such information Berisha. He is liying. Shame on him. Professor Dr. Sali Berisha promissed me that when he comes to New York next year, he will meet with the community and answer any questins we have for him. He promissed me that he will read Lumaj's articles and will advise his legal team to prepare a statement against Examiner for allowing Lumaj to defame Albania
to Tata,
crimes and killings happen everywhere even in the most democratic country. And all the persons you mentioned have been killed in different periods and for different reasons. Azem hajdari was one of the best friends of Berisha do you think he killed him, and he was killed in 1998 the socialist were in power. I don't wanna put in a debate between the 2 parties, cos i coudn't care less of them . Only in this new government Berisha don't have the catholic party of Nard Ndoka in his government. After all is not his fault that they didn't have the necessary numbers(votes).Anyway Ndoka doesn't represent all the catholics. It seems to me that the leaders of this party wants some revenge against Berisha, probably for the killing of one of their activists during this elections campaign. They accused Topalli(catholic) for the murderer. You see it's a political problem not a religious one as someone want to put it. So let's talk about poltics and mafia. Religiuos have nothing to do here
Zotrules,
It is no longer the Serbs, Italians, Greeks, etc., to be blamed for our predicaments, nor are the Albanian people. I believe that our leadership is misguided and does not know what direction to choose: East or West. We have an Eastern work ethic, but we have a Western culture. We love Europe and the USA, but on the other hand we oporate as if we are from Middle East. To join EU, we must hold free elections, respect the rule of law, have an independent judiciary, respect for property rights, fight curroption, respect human rights, etc., all these being Western values. If EU sees that we are serious about joing them, they will help us. But when SP comes to power, they destroy what the DP did. When the DP cmoes to power, they destroy what the SP did. We cannot join the EU this way, and the EU will not allow us to join then until we clean our act. EU is not discriminating against us, but we are not ready for them.
Bossi,
Topalli accused the CDP of being Mafia and ex-communists. She spoke on behalf of sali Berisha in Postrribe. A few days later, the Chairman of the CDP of Malesi e Madhe was assassinated by the government agents. he was assassinated because he was running the campaing against Berisha's man in the MM District, and was going to win if it were not for the killing. You have a lot to learn, young man. Learn as soon as you can. Albania is not what you think it is. Wake up.
Kastrati!!!!!
You want to call us sniches & communist? U want to call a region who put up the first war against communist in Eastern Europe sniches and communist. U want to call Gjek-Selca, Gjergj-Lula, Prek-Cali, Nik-Turku, Kolec-Uci Sniches & communist. Your not even worth responding but I guarantee you, your not man enough to call me a communist or snich to my face.
As far as Paulin Sterkaj is concerned. My friend Kelmendi is not longer there. Who is there? Who is going to put up a fight the senior citizens that are left. You should refrain yourself from the deragotary language and go back to south-bronx being a dooe-man.
continues..
We don't have religions problems in Albania thanks GOD. It's very low to use religion for political purposes, it's not fair. It's mean for them who belive in God and see it used and abused for political purposes. All my friend from Shkodra are catholics and are crazy over Berisha. We have a lot of catholics and orthodoxs that have key positions in the government. As i stated in my previuos posts we don't see each other from a religiuos prospects. We cuoldn't care less. How would be ever possible that an orthodoxs as Fatos Nano, could ever win the elections only with a population of 20% orthodoxs. All this is propaganda against Berisha but indirectly it defame my country. I care only for my country you can say what you want against Berisha, but don't say bad thinks for my country. I don't tolerate that.
Avokati... joining the EU is not what I have in mind. Frankly, I couldn't care less about that. When I say racial discrimination, I mean other things. EU membership is for the government, is a political step, it never falls on the universal declaration of human rights! Visa free regime is for the people, for the individuals, recognizing the fact that Albanians, strange as it might sound, are equal to Serbs, Greeks, Italians, etc... We do not enjoy that, not because of bad government, but because the EU can discriminate between races, cultures, peoples and religions. If it were otherwise, then the government should be penalized instead of the Albanian people. Who can argue with that? Shameful! Humiliating.
As for those standards... sorry to disappoint you, but we score awfully lot higher than most members of the EU itself! Discrimination? In Albania? It's not funny to even dream about.
rCan anyone tell me what is the point of this article?
Is it that the OIC only employs muslims?.....And the point of the story is what? Catholic albanians cant work in the OIC?
Mr.Lumaj vehemenly hates Berisha bc of his connections to the Christian-Democrats and his buddy the Criminal whos car exploded before the last elections. That where he gets his fury from.
As a Result! He tries to defame Sali Berisha as being a leader who looks to the Islamic Worls instead of the West and in the process wantsw to sir controvery among us in what better way than religion. As a Catholic I believe leave religion out completely enough said. Yea its unfortunate 500-years of Turks n all but its done. Im totally against the Albanian who go to Iran and Saudia Arabia n come back to albania n spread their fanatic idealogy n so forth.
Bottom Line! This article should not get a single comment on here. It pure propaganda!
Tata
those are you interpretations to that event, maybe is true maybe not. The police said that the person who was killed was involved in drug dealings, so my friend the things don't go only in one way. Not that i believe what the berisha police said, but i don't even believe you. I don't have sympathy for those who use religions for political purposes. The real aim of all these defaming campaing are coming into surface. It's politics as i suspected.
P.s. Tata i'm not here to lecture you, so i invite you to do the same regarding me. Believe me i don't need you to lecture me. Let's have a democratic debate regardless of our positions or pont of view.
Greetings
Everyone seems to think that being a member in the OIC is negative. Whats the negative?
Can one truly ignore the islamic countries? Is there absolutely no benefits from it? Do the negatives outweigh the positives? If they do, point them out.
This Article will only make sense when an Albanian leader such as Mr.Berisha goes to countries like Saudia Arabia and like our president here in the US takes off his shoes, bows, and kisses the hands of the Omars and abdullahs then ONLY then can the Brilliant genious of Mr. Lumaj post this type of Non-sense. No wonder why journalism is DEAD!!!
If we were more than members and had any sort of influence with these countries why is that the Islamic world does not recognize KOSOVA? The answe is simply bc we are not they're type of muslims but nothing more than the product of 500-years of turkish occupation that gave us a light covering of muslim identity that will rub off as soon as you go back a couple of generations from hasan to PJETER
Albania is the Country of Muslims, Catholics , Orthodoks and other religions. First of all we treat ourself as Albanians than members of religious groups. We are proud of our Albanian identity. Albania should not be a member of OIC. Application of the Charter and other normative acts of OIC means discrimination against non-muslim population. The communities of each religion may be members of different organizations that express their faith but not the State of Albania. Therefore for the good of Albania and Albanians the best is to withdraw from this orgqanization. That's the future of Albanian people.
