Fall fashion Paris 2012… The clothes shown over the next few days will be in store for Fall 2012 or in lay terms, these garments will be hitting the racks around mid-June thru September for fall selling and wearing....that is to say provided we don’t have Indian summer until November. So no matter where you shop, be it Barneys, Bergdorf’s, Bloomingdales, Saks, Jeffrey or eponymous boutiques or for that matter anywhere else, you will either be seeing these exact items or be feeling their influence.
Often referred to as the bad boy of fashion or the “enfant terrible,” Mr. Gaultier makes it very plain that he may be a bad boy but he learned his lessons very well. It I said that with restaurant food, presentation is everything but it can also be said that with a runway presentation, the same holds true.
Mr. Gaultier makes it perfectly clear that his men are slick, chic and sophisticated no matter what they wear and that it is not so much what they wear as how they wear it! As it was once told to me 25 years ago, “Never forget that Gaultier is always a tailor first” to which I might add he is a master showman as well. His men wear a fedora which is dipped over one eye and despite the amalgam of pieces that compose each outfit; this man is polished and has the offhand air of debonair. Think a male version of Catherine Deneuve.
In keeping with the above train of thought, there is the omnipresent tailoring, the knit wear and of course, the tongue I cheek humor that comes with every Gaultier collection. Skirts, kilts, jackets, the incongruous combinations and the prints that are among the words spoken in the vocabulary that is Jean Paul Gaultier’s signature speak. The bricks make you smile, the kilts remind you, the trenches and jackets reinforce the fact that this is a JPG presentation and no one else’s.
Again, these may not be the working wardrobe for the executive at the office, but they for the same man with a great sense of self and confidence.
