Republicans fire back at O’Malley

Annapolis (Map, News) - Republican legislators came out swinging at Gov. Martin O’Malley’s tax plan and the “liberal leadership” of the Maryland Senate and House on Tuesday, throwing digs at O’Malley’s three-day trip to Ireland that begins tonight.

“I’d leave the country, too,” said House GOP Leader Tony O’Donnell, if he had proposed such a massive tax increase.

“I don’t think any of us here are going to Ireland when we have a budget crisis,” said Senate Minority Whip Allan Kittleman, Carroll-Howard.

O’Donnell also thanked O’Malley for the statewide tour promoting his plan to raise $1.5 billion in new revenues with a series of tax hikes to fill a looming deficit.

Marylanders have “gotten the message loud and clear, and they don’t like it,” O’Donnell said.

O’Malley offered a bit of an olive branch to the Republicans Monday as he ordered a special Oct. 29 session of the legislature. “I know that there are some things here that you won’t be able to support,” the governor said, but he hoped to have more conversations with them. At the same time, he rejected budget cuts House Republicans proposed in this year’s budget.

The Republicans said they can’t see much of anything in his plan they can support. They don’t like any of the taxes, they don’t like his slots plan — especially if it includes a referendum — they want more spending cuts and they are “united in opposition” to a special session.

“We have not been consulted on this. We are not part of the discussion,” O’Donnell said. “The governor has rejected our proposals out of hand.”

Kittleman said it was “sad” when the governor last week said they didn’t deserve their paychecks because they were “doing nothing” to resolve the budget crisis. He said the Republicans have been working for months to resolve the deficit without raising taxes.

O’Malley’s staff has said the House Republicans, who favor putting 15,000 slots at six locations, have refused to detail their budget cuts to make up the rest of the deficit. But O’Donnell said, “Our plan has at least as much detail as the governor’s plan.”

“If they’re willing to work with us in good faith, we’re willing to sit down with them,” O’Donnell said. But “we’re not going to provide political fodder” by revealing budget cuts so “they can turn around and whack us over the head” with unpopular cuts.

Take a look around and you will see Wheaton, Silver Spring, Langley Park, doe not have the same calm atmosphere of a safe night time enviornment. Income level averages do not reflect the desirability of a neighborhood gone to a very low level of desirability. We need to enforce federal law and stop pretending that we need more people here working under the table. It does affect the standard of living.

The sad part about all of this is that Omalley didn't have to raise taxes but it is part of the democratic plan. He is going to spend us into deficits and do it all over again. Then he will tell us what hard work is was to raise taxes. The cycle of one party government. Look at Baltimore.

Maryland is a democrat state because of the fact that lowlife always vote for the socialist party and the lowlife is in the majority. People who are educated, have excellent careers and handle their money well are in the minority; and, therefore, are outvoted in every election. Though we pay the most taxes, we have no say in the government, nor do we receive any respect.

To "Good News", you are forgetting that EVERYONE regardless of income pays sales tax. Rich people won't care about these increases because they can always move someplace better. It is those of us stuck in the lower and middle classes who will ultimately pay for this. The sales tax increase will lead to more stores dropping jobs to make up for lost income. You'll see, once the Democrats pass all these unnecessary increases (they never looked hard at cutting spending), we'll have higher unemployment, more crime and more affluent people leaving the state for better states like PA, WV, DE and VA.

They ARE in the interest the welfare/nanny state that maryland is becoming. They are in the interest of fat, bloated, inefficient govt bureaucracies, and they are in the interest of the lazy, uneducated, unmotivated, unwilling to work and support themselves government-teet-suckers who comprise more and more of the maryland voting electorate as hard working, self-supporting folks (like myself) make a run for the border. There was a surplus when MOM came in. There is a pending structural deficit (mainly due to Thorton). Spending was increased this year 17.8% (without Thorton being fully funded). We have a balanced budget through June 2008. I work 50 to 60 hours a week to be one of those 'high earners'. I guess I'm not working class because I make good money despite the hours I work. The point is, it's MY money. I'm the one working for it, the state takes it away. Fix the problem in a regular session when cuts can be made also (and I don't mean cutting 200 jobs that were just created and never filled). This is a democratic state, always has been and always will be. Our last election proved we are moving further in that direction by ousting more obstructionist republicans from the general assembly and the corporate republican governor. A people oriented progressive agenda is what we voted for, and now we have the votes in the general assembly to enact it. The people who are complaining are not educated enough to understand why it is important for us to proceed this way. It is for ALL of our own benefit that the tax reforms are passed.
