Drivers who opt to illegally park their vehicles in transit-only lanes designated for San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency buses

could soon be caught doing so on camera.

State Senate passed AB 101 Tuesday that, if approved by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, will allow Muni buses to monitor San Francisco roads

from cameras placed on the buses, according to San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.

Parking tickets subsequently could be issued if the cameras reveal a vehicle parked illegally in a transit lane, according to the mayor's office.

Muni buses carry nearly 700,000 passengers each day and can be significantly hindered by vehicles double parked in transit lanes, according

to the mayor's office.

"Double parking significantly impacts on-time performance and delays hundreds, if not thousands, of San Franciscans on public transit city-wide every day," Newsom said in a statement.
