Former Google employee and founder of Lights Out San Francisco Nat Tyler has a vision that on Oct. 20 between 7 and 8 p.m. The City, businesses and restaurants will say: Lights out.
He dreamt up the event after visiting Sydney, Australia, where he said he was dining one evening and all of a sudden the lights went out — including at the Sydney Opera House across the way — and candles were brought in for the remainder of the night.
Sydney had turned out its lights for one hour in an effort to save energy and promote energy conservation.
So why not in San Francisco, Tyler wondered, because this city is well-known for setting environmental trends. San Francisco recently became the first U.S. city to enact a ban on plastic bags.
Tyler has been working with the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, city officials and others to get everyone on board adhering to the “Lights Out” call.
Today, Supervisor Jake McGoldrick said he will introduce a resolution to support “extinguishing nonessential lighting in all city government buildings and landmarks” for one hour on Oct. 20, as well as to dedicate that date as the official “Lights Out San Francisco Day.” The event will also include the handing out of free energy-efficient light bulbs.
Tyler is also working with the Golden Gate Bridge Transportation District, which he hopes will approve turning off the bridge’s “nonessential lights” during the event. And he also hopes music venues will agree to only acoustic music during the hour.
When Sydney turned off its lights for one hour, it saved more than 24 tons of carbon dioxide, which is the equivalent of taking 48,613 cars off the road for one hour, the resolution says.

At least when the Simpson's did it, they got to see the meteor shower. I don't see how turning off the lights on the cables of the bay bridge would reduce much of the overall lighting power consumption. I could hardly even tell the lights were not on (in the before and after photos).

From the city that brought you plastic bag legislation and cutting costs at city hall by eliminating bottled water. In the city where we are somehow limiting enviromental degridation and utilities usage by building homes and office complexes just about as fast as we can. Exactly how does that work?

Lights Out San Francisco's mission is to engage San Franciscans in taking direct action to conserve energy and fight global warming. Their goal is simply to raise awareness about ways to lower energy consumption by encouraging residents, government offices and businesses to turn off all non-essential lighting for one hour from 7-8 p.m. This will not make the city an unsafe place to be. Remember, humans lived without electricity for quite a long time, and many people live without it today.

To me its seems a bit odd to for the Board of Sups. order City employees to shut off the lights in the name of keeping global warming at bay when with their same breath the Board of Sups. demand more high density low-income housing from builders? More housing would mean more lights, more energy used, more use of natural resourses, higher demand on City services, more cars (they will bring their cars, garage or no garage) and more people to squeeze just snugly in our 49 square mile island.

Personally, I think overpopulation *IS* the problem and that without it global warming wouldn't even be an issue. The population has gone from 1 to 6 billion in less than 100 years. It's easier to rag on cars and industry than to tell people to breed less, though.

... Why is it that right wingers hate, and do not understand science? ... I could ask why is it that people always jump on board the latest environmental trend. In the 60's we were told overpopulation would kill us (we're still here), in the 70's we were told pollution would kill us (we're still here), in the 80's we were told AIDS would kill us (we're still here), in the 90's it was killer bees, bird flu, etc. (we're still here). Now in the 2000's it's "global warming". I'm willing to bet that in 50 years we'll still be here.

As one who strongly supports efforts to stop global warming I have to say that it is efforts like these that give me little hope that anything will actually be done about the greatest threat we have ever faced. This lights out idea is extremely idealistic. We need pragmatism. What people like Al Gore are trying to do is to bring real-life SOLUTIONS to the problem, not remissions of guilt, which is all this lights out thing really is. The group think mentality within the San Fran enviro community is astonishingly inept.

It seems that Sydney actually pulled the plug, while the San Francisco plan is the voluntary shutting off of lights for an hour. In our City of earthquakes and power failures, maybe it's not such a bad idea to learn how to survive - and thrive - with no electricity for awhile. One day we all get to play "earthquake - ready or not. It's best to be ready, and this seems like a unique way to be prepared. Maybe even fun!

Can we PLEASE stop with the "global warming" crap? Sure, the earth is warming a bit, as it has many times; it also has cooled many times. The globaloney business is yet another attempt by the radical left to force its way on everyone. We are being asked to give up, essentially, modern life and return to pre-industrial times. Ain't. Gonna. Happen. But if the enviros want to live in the Ewok village, then please move there and leave the rest of us alone.

I experienced the lights out in Syndey, Australia, when I went with relatives from there out to a restaurant. It may seem corny to us but they continued on like the other customers like nothing happened. I asked them what happened and they said once a week, not knowing which day the government would put it, it would happen. I said it would not buy well with us in the States. I said that is why we have "Rolling Blackouts".

Australia would not have Americans as you are a bunch of backward thinking self serving slobs without an ounce of imagination. I hope the goddess of ecology is reading this and slams you all with a 3 or 4 day black out, which most Americans under 40 would not survive, but would give the civilized world some breathing room...
