A pedestrian suffered injuries that were not life-threatening in a midday shooting near the intersection of Turk, Mason and Market streets Monday. The City has seen an increase in daylight shootings in 2007.
SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - Gunfire on Market Street once again crackled in the afternoon air Monday, injuring one man and forcing the temporary closure of a section of the street popular with tourists.

The victim, described as a black man in his late 20s, was shot near the intersection of Turk, Mason and Market streets just before 2 p.m. and made his way down Market Street to Fifth Street, where people came to his aid before paramedics arrived, according to San Francisco police spokesman Steve Mannina.

The victim was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Mannina said. No arrests have been made.

A city employee charged with washing the sidewalk after the shooting, who didn’t want to give his name, said blood streaked down the sidewalk for about 30 feet along the victim’s path.

The shooting comes after several similar daylight shootings in The City this year. A January car chase ended with an 11 a.m. crash, a burst of gunfire and a bleeding victim stumbling into a nearby business. In April, a man jumped out of one car around noon and fired into another near Eighth and Market streets. On May 11, during lunchtime, a man opened fire on a car at Fifth and Harrison streets. Later in May, Mission High School senior Jamar Lake was shot and killed at about 10 a.m. at Eddy and Laguna streets.

Monday’s incident began with a silver sedan heading east on Market Street, then making a U-turn after passing Sixth Street and pulling to the curb at the intersection of Turk, Mason and Market streets, according to police. A male pedestrian approached the car and spoke with the two people inside, police said.

Witnesses reported seeing the man run away from the car when one of the two occupants of the vehicle opened fire, hitting the victim in the leg. The victim ran to the intersection of Fifth and Market streets, an area popular for pick-up chess games, Mannina said. The sedan fled westward on Turk street.

Marvin Boykins was playing chess on Market Street near Fifth Street when he heard four shots ring out. People started scattering in the streets, he said, frightened that they might be hit in the crossfire. “I heard the shots and then saw a guy running,” he said. The victim fell next to a tree at the end of the block, he said.

Matt Carlson, who bartends at the restaurant Farmer Brown at Mason and Turk streets, said he heard the shots, but didn’t see any suspects or the victim. “There are fights on this block,” he said. “But a shooting is definitely uncommon.”

In a presentation on homicides before the Police Commission on July 11, Lt. John Murphy said more deadly violence than usual has taken place in the Tenderloin and South of Market neighborhoods this year.

My friends from NYC now living in SF are right? SF is turning into what NYC was prior to Gullianni. This is getting so out of hand. But then when you have a PUblic DA that doesn't support the death penalty do you think killers are going to think twice for shooting someone dead knowing darn well the DA will seek the death penalty.

The General Assistance program in SF currently has almost 10,000 single adults on city-funded welfare. There is no time limit. Many of the "clients" have been on General Assistance for over 10 years. SF is the ONLY county in the Bay Area that allows this. All the neighboring counties have 90 day limits on welfare for single adults. THIS is the source of the homless plague in this city. Your tax dollars support thousands of deadbeat drug addicts, drifters, con artists, drunks, and others who simply will not work. They get a check from the city - up to $410 a MONTH for doing NOTHING. The voters of SF need to stop enabling this dysfunction. The supervisors will never address this, so it must be done via the ballot. Get something on the ballot that ends General Assistance after 90 days.

We currently run a business on market near 7th and this city(the entire city as an organization) has done nothing to assist what has been labeled "thieves alley" (as written in SFgate) among other things. Many of the business owners in this area have been waiting patiently for more than 10 years for any help from the city. Currently the environment is causing our business to suffer to the point of deciding to stay and continue the business or leave for more hospitable environments. We have loitering, drug dealers, peddlers, and people just waiting to do "smash and grabs" (or otherwise known as car breakins). Also most of the undesirables are armed with either firearms, knives, or any other item that can be used as a weapon. It amazes me that we are one of the major cities in the US where loitering is allowed. So basically a drug dealer can stand 3 feet from our entrance and sell drugs. Good luck San Francisco.

For the sake of our future, our children, I would never consider San Francisco a place to have and raise a family correctly. Crime is so rampant and unbelieveably acceptable based on the laws passed or plans to pass by the "liberal politicians" of this city, it's no wonder I hear most families wanting out of this city. AND to you liberal voters/citizens out there! How can you allow this to happen? You put these leaders running our city and look what happend? More likely, this shooting, based on the possible fact that rival drug leaders are infiltrating this city is because you want to allow drugs (i.e. medical marijuana) to be legalized and the drug lords are seeing this as an advantage. You need to step up and stop these drug dealers/kingpins/lords etc from destroying this city by voting for and telling the politicians to put criminals in jail where they belong - not living next door to my family!!!

I seriously doubt these shooters are NRA members or legally possess their firearms. What SF needs is to stop its out-of-control leftward direction get some moderation in City Hall. The voters need to stop electing these liberal loons who forsake the safety of the citizenry for fear of being labeled "racist". The politicians here have no guts to demand that the inhabitants of certain communities end their ongoing cycles of violence. The coddling of these vermin must stop. All of this is in the hands of the voters. Stop electing these wishy washy slackers who will do nothing to effectively combat crime. Passive measures like cameras are about as "tough" as they want to get and even then it's met with scorn. Wake up San Francisco. Liberalism was fine but it is now passe. Grow up, look at these issues maturely, grow some gonads and fight back. Violent criminals abound where there is a weak-minded citizenry, which liberals excel at by promoting an agenda that turns people into sheep.

I believe that both these incidents are in Chris Daly's district. Of course you remember that Daly was the one who wanted to cut the number of police academy classes in order to add services for the vunerable. Seems to me the services most needed in District 6 are police, drug enforcement and gang task force actions. We as a city have to stop confusing the need for compassion with non-enforcement of drug and violence laws. We can be compassionate to the needy, but we should still arrest and prosecute the drug dealers and gang bangers. It isn't 'compassionate' to give them probation, short sentences, ROR, or diversion programs. Violent criminals don't need social programs - they need jail time and lots of it. Chris Daly needs to demand better policing and prosecution of criminal behaviour in his district. Don't blame the police or the mayor - blame "Mr Compassion" - he's the one who undermines law enforcement, and the courts - they keep turning these creeps loose.

I don't intend to sound knee-jerky but the Legislative branch of the city needs to take a hard line on ANYTHING related to hard drugs which. I live in SOMA and see the same people asking for money for "food" along Van Ness Avenue then walking into my area and shooting drugs with the panhandled money. Its not the Executive branch of the city but the Legislative branch that needs to pass laws to curb this. Cut off money, crack down on crack, physically work at cleaning the worst neighborhoods (trash, graffitti etc.) and take back the neighborhoods. Make it look like we care. Call the police anytime you see a drug deal, but let US let the police take action. Also and perhaps the most important...get the DA to prosecute with proof and evidence and have the judiciary do their job. Have to send a message out to anyone doing drugs and related crime to control the drug market that SF is not the place to do business since we will no longer tolerate it

Technology is a good idea. We have so many unsolved cases. At least in England they catch criminals within hours because of the cameras. Our law enforcements can't be everywhere and the trouble spots still can't be controlled. Even if we move foot beats to these areas, criminals just move to another area. Criminals will still do what they do, but at least law enforcement will have video proof of a crime to catch a glimse of physical details of the perps and such like make, model, license plate, etc...

The solution isn't that hard: use technology. Blanket the city with surveillance cameras which can record crimes and read license plates. Mandate that anyone bringing a vehicle into San Francisco be required to have a "Fastrak" transponder. Blanket the city with transponder readers. Pay for all this with increased tolls and savings on the toll collectors' salaries, who would no longer be needed when everyone has Fastrak. You could also print parking tickets faster when the meter maids (or even the meters themselves) had transponder readers; other crimes, like graffiti, vandalism, littering, and even double parking could be reduced. London has hundreds of surveillance cameras; Melbourne has mandatory vehicle transponders; both cities are doing just fine. Of course, there is a knee-jerk reaction against using technology of this sort-- something about right to privacy and such. But there is no assurance of privacy in public streets anyway. The only one hurt would be the criminals.

This city needs to figure out what they want to do. What are more cops on foot going to do? Teh Same thing happens in western addition. Cop on foot on other end of the lock, hears gun shots, runs to the sound of gun fire a block and a half away, gets there and the suspects are already long gone in their car.. Victim on the ground no one saw anything. The city needs to let the police do what the need to do, stop letting the board of supes try to run things they dont understand.
