BALTIMORE (Map, News) - Looking at box scores of the Orioles’ minor league affiliates can leave fans excited and frustrated, especially when examining pitchers.
The Orioles’ farm system has several pitchers among the league leaders in strikeouts and walks. Orioles director of minor league operations David Stockstill said the nature of developing minor league pitchers revolves around teaching them how to maximize talent.
“It’s part of the process of dealing with young pitchers,” Stockstill said. “A lot of these young players go out there and try to strike everybody out. We’re trying to get them to learn to conserve some of those pitches by getting hitters to ground out or fly out after just one or two pitches.”
Chorye Spoone and Brandon Erbe of Single-A Frederick and Double-A Bowie’s Radhames Liz are among the pitchers Stockstill referenced.
Spoone (Northeast High/CCBC-Catonsville) and Erbe (McDonogh School) rank third and seventh in the Carolina League in strikeouts with 81 and 75, respectively. But Erbe also leads the league with 46 walks while Spoone is tied for third at 43. Liz entered the week ranked third in the Eastern League with 107 strikeouts, but is also second with 54 bases on balls.
Here are some other players producing in the Orioles’ farm system:
NORKFOLK TIDES: First baseman Mike Cervenak is second in the International League with 108 hits. He entered the week batting .286 with 10 home runs and 52 RBIs.
BOWIE BAYSOX: Closer Bob McCrory is 1-1 with three saves and a 7.71 ERA in seven games since being recalled from Single-A Frederick June 20.
FREDERICK KEYS: Third baseman Ryan Finan is tied for ninth in the Carolina League with a .289 batting average following a 10-game stretch when he went 13-for-37 with three homers and eight RBIs.
DELMARVA SHOREBIRDS: Pitcher Wilfredo Perez improved to 4-2 with a 1.90 ERA after allowing a run on five hits to go along with seven strikeouts in an 8-6 win over Lakewood Sunday.
ABERDEEN IRONBIRDS: Outfielder Matthew Angle is tied for third in the New York-Penn League with 20 runs scored and is third in stolen bases with 11.
BLUEFIELD ORIOLES: Outfielder Kraig Binick is among the top hitters in the Appalachian League, as he is first in batting average (.426), hits (40), runs (30) and on-base percentage (.530).
