Carroll County (Map, News) - A Mount Airy 9-year-old has been charged with first-degree arson and malicious burning after a fire broke out in an apartment.

The blaze started about 1:39 p.m. Friday in a ground-level apartment at 201 Watersville Road in Carroll County, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office. The unit is occupied by David and Joy Askew, who were on vacation at the time.

The boy, who was not identified, entered the apartment using a hidden key and set fire intentionally to the couple’s clothes and bedding, according to officials.

Interviews with neighbors led officials to question the youth, who admitted to starting the fire, said Deputy State Fire Marshal W. Faron Taylor.

The boy was referred to the Department of Juvenile Services and released to his parents’ custody.

Twenty firefighters from nearby companies responded to the blaze, which officials estimate caused $500 of damage. No injuries were reported.

Re: Unqualified fire examiners -- Does anyone else remember the unqualified MPD fingerprint examiner? Dozens of cases were thrown out of court when he was exposed. Time to re-examine the Eastern Market fire, since ATF opinions differed from those of DCFD.
