Metro riders can expect to be treated to a little song and dance as they head to and from work this summer.

Under a plan between the District of Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities and Metro, artists will appear outside various stops across the District from June through September, said Lisa Richards, who is directing the program for the city.

Performers will be chosen in an open audition scheduled May 10 and 12 at Metro headquarters, at 600 Fifth St. in Northwest.

The program will not affect artists who already appear outside stops, although they might want to find another Metro venue if there is a conflict, Richards said. Performers under the city-sponsored program will have permits, she said.

“This is a separate program,” Richards said. “These artists will be paid and will have to wear Metro insignia.”

Similar programs are scheduled in Prince George’s County and in Virginia, Richards said.

Richards said auditions are open to “anything that will be exciting and invigorating to anyone’s commute.”
