Maryland women show they know how to host national spotlight

WASHINGTON (Map, News) - When the student section belts out “Rock and Roll, Part II,” it’s truly a party. Throw in a full house of sign-waving crazies plus national TV and Maryland women’s basketball finally proved it’s no longer secondary to the Terrapins’ male counterparts.

Funny what a national title can do.

The No. 3 Terps eclipsed the ACC single-game attendance mark in their 84-71 loss to No. 2 North Carolina Sunday night with 17,950 filling Comcast Center. While plenty of young girls made the “Scream for Ice Cream” contest akin to a Hanson concert, there were also plenty of alumni and a full student section. This from a program that seldom cracked a grand in the stands before coach Brenda Frese’s 2002 arrival.

“I’m proud that Maryland owns the attendance record and it was our own record we surpassed,” Terps athletic director Debbie Yow said.

Comcast and predecessor Cole Field House have long served as common ground for the state’s fans split by Washington and Baltimore sports loyalties. The “Oh” yell during the national anthem isn’t scorned by Washingtonians despite the campus lying closer to the nation’s capital. The basketball court serves as a town hall for Marylanders.

However, nothing truly elevates a Maryland game to major event status like North Carolina and Duke, which arrives Feb. 18 to another sellout. Students ignored Tar Heel introductions by pretending to read the newspaper while red glow sticks and 10-foot torches greeted Maryland’s starters.

Actually, Maryland had less to fear from North Carolina than its own mistakes. The first-half shooting was colder than a Nancy Pelosi stare. The Terps were all butterfingers with too many turnovers. The Tar Heels converted second chances too often while the Terps’ shots regularly leaked off the rim to give North Carolina a double-digit buffer for much of the game.

But what a grand comeback. Down 20 points, the Terps steadily wore down the Tar Heels while the crowd stayed to show the sellout wasn’t a marketing gimmick. It was the same roar that follows the men’s games. Maryland closed to 67-66 before North Carolina once more pulled away. Still, the Terps showed defending champions don’t surrender.

Ultimately, it was only the warmup for the NCAA Tournament. Maryland, North Carolina and Duke could be No. 1 seeds vying for their second straight Final Four appearances. That’s when these games will truly count. Until then, Comcast has two teams worth watching.

There are two statments in your article that I believe to be false. First, Todd Collins played under Al Saunders' offensive system his last few years in K.C. and for all his time in Washington. Not only is that not a West Cooast style of offense, but having mastered Saunders' playbook after years of practice aided him last season. Campbell's best year from his days at Auburn until now was while he ran the West Coast offense. Campbell was coming into his own last season when he got injured. If any quarterback can adjust it is Jason Campbell. The Redskins hired Zorn first as a coordinator to help Campbell get to the next level. The organization has invested to much to give up on Campbell. The Redskins believes in and is also commited to Campbell as a franchise quarteback.

DC would have planned better if MLB would have given them a commitment that they would get the team but they didn't. So DC was forced to put together the best stadium/parking that they could find. BUD SELIG is the devil. You haven't even mentioned the Bullcrap TV deal we were forced to accept. This is how they do business. Hold cities hostage and force them to build stadiums. I am just a little sick of all the crying about freakin parking. Like we are the only city that has issues with parking. Try finding a spot in NY or Boston. They seem to manage. The key is "winning". If we win and compete for the playoffs no one will care about parking. The big key is their are things to do at the stadium that makes going their early tempting. Get some beer, good food, meet some hot chicks and get ready for some baseball. Stop the crying game you shill.

The transportation/parking issues around the new Nationals ballpark were obvious over 3 years ago, when the site was announced by Bud Selig. Why he insisted on placing this ballpark there is beyond me. There is no parking around the stadium, the roads leading in are smaller than the roads leading into RFK, etc. It will become painfully obvious very soon that this location is a disaster. I live in Nothern Virginia, 18 miles from RFK, and I could drive to the stadium parking lot for most games in 30 minutes, and be back home in less than 45 minutes from the time I left my seat after the game was finished. Won't be able to do that from the new location. Until a real, workable solution is found, I will probably attend less than half the games that I have attended the past 3 seasons and I'll likely go when crowds won't be very big so I don't have to deal with waiting 2 or more hours for a train or shuttle to return home.

The transportation logistics nightmare only re-emphasizes what a bad idea this stadium is. Not to mention the negative impact on the people who live in the neighborhood to be overrun by commuting-frustrated fans. RFK is a perfectly good stadium, and after all the money spent, it's probably still going to be a better venue to watch baseball. Besides, no tailgating at the new place? Horrible. Send the Nats back to RFK and recycle all the material used to build the new park for a memorial commemorating how the DC government wastes its taxpayers dollars so frivolously.

Gibbs "supposed to be a consultant to Mr. Snyder" as mentioned before his retirement. If he did not then public and fans ought to know the situation. Until decission are made, I believe Williams should be given the chance and Al Saunder offense should be the Redskains offense.

I have followed the Redskins since I was a kid. I am 65. This is it. It takes a hack to know a hack and that is what Snyder and Cerrato are. The Redskins are doomed to the celler for a long time. Not until the ownership changes will there be hope. Snyder can make all the money he wants the Redskins are going nowhere and fast. Money doesn't buy character and competence.
