“In some schools, a 3.0 [grade point average is required to achieve honor roll]; in others, it’s a 3.4,” said Lisa Boarman, facilitator of school counseling for the school system.
Members of the Howard County Association of Student Councils, an umbrella group representing middle and high school student councils in the county, want honor roll requirements changed to reflect uniform standards for all high schools.
“It makes more sense to have the same academic standards for honor roll,” said Wossen Ayele, student member of the county School Board.
To achieve honor roll in the county, students must achieve a GPA between 3.0 and 4.0. However, within that scale, students strive for various honor roll levels, such as principal’s, gold and silver — all of which have different GPA requirements depending on the high school.
To gauge students’ opinions on the matter, Boarman created an online survey for about 100 students.
Nearly 90 responses have been returned, and the results will be discussed at 9 a.m. during the county student association of councils meeting at 9 a.m. Dec. 12.
The meeting will be held at the Applications and Research Laboratory in Ellicott City.
Geoffrey Burgan, president of the Student Government Association at Atholton High School, filled out a survey and said students should make honor roll if they achieve at least a 3.2 GPA or better.
“If you get a 3.0, at the very minimum, you’re doing 80 percent of work in school,” he said.
Another issue is whether students who take honors, Advanced Placement and gifted and talented courses should receive extra points toward honor roll because of their difficult courses.
Burgan said he sees both sides of the issue.
“The weighted GPA [shows that students are taking more rigorous courses], but is it right to punish someone for doing great in other courses?” he asked.

In my honest opinion the reasons that kids fail to meet academic challenges is primarily due to the breakdown in the family and community. The students who attend Douglass High are primarily African American or deemed as black. When Douglass sent kids to college nearly 50 years ago I feel as though the culture then was internal and not external.Today kids are unaware of the difference between being black or African American. The approach is the lessor of two evils,if I go with being black then my image of myself is what society expects of me,uneducated, ruthless void of self-awareness,comedian,fake,a product of the ghetto that the world fears. On the other hand if I identify with being African American it boils down to kids not being able to identify with Africa, really who wants only to be compared to a slave after all thats the only thing kids realize about the term and is mainly taught in the public school system and discussed within people who have no understanding of self.

I often wonder why the most troubled child even bothers going to school, we know who they are; will not listen, will not allow other students that want an education the chance to concentrate on their studies and on the teacher. Then it came to me, school is where these children feel the most safe! Home life is in the toilet, street life is to dangerous,so they go where they feel unafraid, to school, where they can disrupt and bully. These children that want to learn and teachers that want to teach have much to difficult a task, just to show up for school each day. Let us pray.

When our school board is full of people more interested in becoming supervisors than in fixing the city. (Eric Mar and Mark Sanchez) Then why is it shocking that security and quality in SFUSD has gone down. SFUSD loses 800 Students a year, mostly due to high cost of living but also due to low quality of the school district. The Recent passage of Prop A is insane, its like a business giving raises to employees who lose 800 clients annually. If anyone reads this and lives in District 1 or 9 send a message to the two BOE cronies and don't vote for Sanchez or Mar.

Children should be able to walk to school. If neighborhood schools aren't good enough or big enough to accommodate them, isn't something wrong? Of course, make an exception for special programs, but why should a child have to take a bus or be driven across the city to get to a "good" school? The schools are all in the same district and we're all paying for them: why are they so unequal?

This is the best news we ever had. It is long overdue to fire teachers and restructure the schools. 10 and 20 percent pay raises cannot continue. Property taxes should be cut by 50 percent to start with and the mandate that no person getting a check from gov can get more that 50 percent of their pay in retirement and work at least to 62 and pay 1/3 of their medical. This goes for all of them.

The Rosewood was founded in 1888 as an institution for the mentally handicap. During this period from 1888 to the present, thousands of people went through the institution. While Rosewood was set up for what people felt were the right reasons, the institution greatly failed the people it was supposed to serve. Thousands died prematurely in horrific conditions at Rosewood during this period. The Governor recently closed the Rosewood facility in Owings Mills, leaving over 300 acres of valuable land open in Owings Mills. A few years ago, the Association of Jewish Charities purchased 55 of these acres to develop. It is rumored that they paid only $350,000 for the land. Most likely a large part of the remaining land will be purchased and developed. The tragedy of the development of these lands is not only the loss of the open lands and the low price that borders on political corruption that will most likely be paid, but the true tragedy is the forgotten victims of the Rosewood period. This article is very true with the school putting false person on the roster to gain Govnt funds. Also falsely firing teachers that question their crooked system. I would have talks with these teachers before and after they get fired or just leave because of the running of the school. I make sure that my child IEP is being carried out that the only time teaching is done right. Tell me how are you going to have a security guard be a teacher? What strings were pulled for this to happen,,and the incidents that never get reported that I have been a witness to. MY children attend this very school because they had promise when they were opening that that they would have a music studio as an course for students that were going into this field. Turn out they just provided this studio and open it Oct "07" and they open the door to the school ,,when,,in "04",,wow my children have no interest for it now. It was an unprovoked attack, and had it not been for the other students in my class who put him down, he could have killed me. Teachers are held responsible and accountable for the safety of students. The violence in our schools has risen to the point that the safety of teachers and staff MUST be addressed now. The public needs to be aware that violent acts in schools are like rapes. The incidence of occurance to actual reporting is unbalanced.

There is constant debate over the Montessori teaching philosophy in comparison to that of our conventional public school system especially when Montessori kids transition to middle and high school. With my twins we did the opposite, they started by attending first and second grades at a public school and having had the opportunity to send them to a private school, we thought of trying a local Montessori school and the difference in their advancement was noticeable. They became more critical and analytical in their thinking and we felt they have acquired social skills as well. Wish I started sending them to Montessori at an earlier age.
