It rips off a number of recent science-fiction films, but since it takes place in the U.K., “Doomsday” somehow gets a pass. The premise: A terrible virus ravages Scotland in 2005, then the government walls up the country to stop it from spreading. Fast forward 30 years, we find out it didn’t work. The cure may be found in the survivors living in Scotland cut off from the world. A team of military specialists is sent to recover the cure; they find Darwin’s law is in full effect, with the strong feeding on the weak and mobs controlling the land. Yes, it is “Escape from New York,” but in another place — with a hot chick (Rhona Mitra) who wears an eye patch (seriously).

Mix in a little “Mad Max,” “The Road Warrior” “Land of the Dead” and “Aliens,” and you have “Doomsday,” a surprisingly fun, blatant rip-off science-fiction/action film. The DVD has three good featurettes (including one on the cool cars and gadgets), audio commentary, deleted scenes and a bloody unrated version of the film. Price: $29.98. Rent or buy: Great rental.

HAROLD AND KUMAR ESCAPE FROM GUANTANAMO BAY — UNRATED TWO-DISC SPECIAL EDITION

The high-on-life duo returns to DVD, picking up right where “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle” left off. This time, a misunderstanding on an airplane causes the two to be sent to Gitmo, where they break out and have an all-new adventure. Yes, Neil Patrick Harris is back, too. This is as funny as the first “Harold and Kumar” and deserves to be in your collection for its sheer hilarity. A second disc of extras and unrated material are included. Price: $35.99. Rent or buy: Buy.

THE HILLS — THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON

This not-sure-if-it-is-scripted MTV series follows a handful of friends and foes around Los Angeles who somehow keep running into one another despite the fact they live in a city of 6 million people. (The show also has two spin-offs: “Bromance,” coming soon, and another following the exploits of cast member Whitney.) This set has 28 episodes; the characters are Audrina, Lauren, Heidi, Whitney, Lo and more. Extras include interviews with the cast, audio commentaries and deleted scenes. Price: $39.99. Rent or buy: Rent.

LOST BOYS: THE TRIBE

If you surf the Internet, you may have caught an ad for A&E’s TV show “The Two Coreys,” a docu-drama about the lives of child stars Corey Feldman and Corey Haim. One big issue in the show has been the duo’s participation in “The Lost Boys” sequel. This is it, dubbed “Lost Boys: The Tribe.” Luckily, they are just minor characters. Price: $19.98. Rent or buy: Rent.

THE LOST BOYS BLU-RAY

Not to be outdone by a new film featuring the same characters, the original 1987 film (a very good movie) debuts in high definition. It’s still a quintessential cult film of the 1980s. This DVD has special features that were on multiple standard definition releases. But it’s worth adding to your growing Blu-ray collection. Price: $28.99. Rent or buy: Buy.

WAR GAMES 25 ANNIVERSARY EDITION

“War Games” is back for its 25th anniversary — how old do you feel now? — with a new digital cut of the film. The set’s second disc has new audio commentaries, featurettes, interviews and more. Price: $14.98. Rent or buy: Buy, it’s cheap.

WAR GAMES: THE DEAD CODE

This sequel to “War Games” lacks the tension, emotion and complexity of the original. Why did they make it? All about cash — someone didn’t want to be outdone by “The Lost Boys.” Price: $26.98. Rent or buy: Rent — if that.
