Police identify officer who killed alleged robber

Prince George’s County police identified Saturday an off-duty police officer who allegedly shot and killed a man he says was trying to rob him.

Police spokesman Henry Tippett says Corporal William Peaco, a 22 year veteran of the department, called police at approximately 3:42 a.m. on Friday to report an attempted robbery. Police say two armed men had approached Peaco near an apartment complex in the 4400 block of Rena Road in Suitland, Md., and attempted to rob him.

Police found 18-year-old John C. Watts of southeast D.C. on the scene with gunshot wounds in the upper body. Watts was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police continue to search for a second man allegedly involved in the robbery attempt. Officials say they recovered a shotgun from the apartment’s parking lot.

Six shot in Northeast

Six people were shot in the fifth district of D.C. late Friday night according to District police.

It appears that all six victims were shot on Lincoln Road, NE, said spokeswoman Helen Andrews. Officials found three victims on Lincoln Road and another about a block away on North Capitol Street, NE. Two others drove themselves to a hospital.

All of the victims were apparently shot in the body, said Andrews. Authorities are searching for two suspects in the shooting. – David Sherfinski

Two injured in collision

A driver and a D.C. firefighter were injured after their vehicles collided during an emergency response to a fire late Friday afternoon.

D.C. fire department spokesman Alan Etter said the civilian vehicle was traveling north of 5th street and the fire truck was traveling west on Longfellow when the vehicles collided.

None of the other four firefighters involved in the crash were injured, he said. – David Sherfinski

Manassas women face animal cruelty charges

Two women who ran a Manassas animal shelter face more animal cruelty charges after several dogs they obtained from Craigslist were found in a vacant home.

Brenda Dodson, 30, and Sandra Cortes, 44, were each charged with two counts of grand larceny and six counts of animal cruelty.
