WASHINGTON (Map, News) - After days of media mockery, Barack Obama has decided to stop using a presidential-looking seal that his campaign designed and affixed to his podium on Friday.
Journalists said the seal, which features an eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, smacks of arrogance. John McCain's camp had a field day, calling the seal “laughable, ridiculous, preposterous and revealing - all at the same time.”
The seal was conspicuously missing from Obama's lectern when he spoke to a group of women in Albuquerque on Monday. Not surprising, given how much grief Obama took from a normally laudatory press corps after unveiling the seal at an appearance in Chicago on Friday.
“What a bizarre and dumb idea,” railed NBC political director Chuck Todd. “It really feeds the arrogance narrative.”
The oversized blue seal was emblazoned with the Latin phrase “Vero Possumus,” which roughly translates into “yes, we can.” It also featured a plug for the candidate's website.
“The Audacity of Hype,” cracked ABC's Jake Tapper. “No word on whether they played a remix of 'Hail to the Chief' as Obama walked in.”
Andrew Malcolm of the Los Angeles Times observed that Obama “has decided not to wait for any of the formalities like a presidential election, an inauguration or even a nomination, which he still hasn't actually officially won yet.”
Marc Ambinder of the Atlantic magazine was the first to note that Obama would deep-six the seal.
“I'm told that Obama recognizes that it was a silly mistake,” Ambinder said. “Does the press think Obama is arrogant? Yes.”
Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics, said the episode reinforces this media perception of Obama.
“The press corps adopts a subtext for each candidate,” Sabato told The Examiner. “Daddy Bush was 'a nice guy but out of touch.' Bill Clinton was 'smart but randy.' Bob Dole was 'heroic but too old.' Gore was 'brilliant but a fibber and a bore.' Dubya was 'pleasant but dumb.'”
He added: “Obama's subtext is rapidly becoming 'charismatic but arrogant.'”
The Obama campaign declined to comment.

This type of arrogance, intentional or not is just not permissible from anyone wishing to enter the presidency. I have been exposed to cultures around the world both friend and foe, your image or the image that you want to project for the basis of control is critical. We are talking about cultures who will determine a man’s demeanor as a reason to attack or use caution. Obama’s mistakes of very subtle issues, underestimating Iran, Russia (trust me they are interlinked). Iran launching a rocket, Russia invading are jabs in a prize fight measuring the response and checking your opponent. Obama is not prepared for this, he has to little experience. Hey I like the guy he’ s can motivate large masses of people, but sadly he is just not ready yet.

We need to look at the whole picture here and not be so quick to judge Obama on the outward trappings. I believe that his Presidency will be the fresh breath of air we all need after 8 l-o-o-o-n-g years of lies and deceit. It seems interesting to me that people are nit-picking him on silly little points like a bad choice in a logo. Hey, I would rather have someone in the White House who is willing to take chances for change, even if it seems naive...than a die hard political cog in the rusty wheel of political rhetoric. Just my humble opinion. GObama '08

Most main stream Muslims in Indonesia are deeply kind people. So His distancing himself makes me question him more. Why is he Distancing himself from his Reverend? Again he asks us to believe that even though he attended church for 20 years it did not influence him..... So why did he go? He certainly does not strike me as a stupid man, but he wants us to believe that none of these things affected him in any manner.... That bothers me.

I am happy to be on the side of folks who can write about "Professor Hydrofoil" and "all the guy needs is a cape" and the varied translations of "vero possumus." Intelligent humor is droll, abstract, joyful, funny, punny, and clever. Conversely, the Barry Obama supporters have a hard time getting content right, let alone context, and notions that are abstract or nuanced are impossible for them to comprehend. Note that when I wrote about BO being “new” to these shores, Flocko translated that to mean not being born in America. [Where did he get that idea?] Then, a reader made the point that the Muslim culture is pervasive in Indonesia and Flocko jumpted to “Islamic extremism.” Flocko changed "stepfather" to "father" and then denied his influence. [why else did he go to mosque for four years?] Then he asked if I denied writing what I wrote (as if!). He then quoted from wiki [as if that is a reliable source]. He also calls counter-arguments “attacks.” He denies that De

I hereby predict that the 2008 presidential election will end in a tie because of one hanging chad in Plam Beach County, FL; thereby throwing the election into the House. The vote will here end in another tie because of the absence of Barney Frank who is romancing a male page. The Senate vote then will end in a tie because of the absence of Senator Kennedy, who thinks that it's gotta be spring break somewhere. Scratching their collective heads, the 9 members of the Roberts court all agree that they want nothing to do with this political hot potato and decree that the election will finally be decided by a UFC-style MMA match at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on July 4, 2009. Meanwhile, in another part of town, President Bush continues to fill in as the "acting POTUS" until the outcome of the election. To be continued...

As a retired LEO & Military Vet, I find him to be a disgrace. This FREEloading, carpetbagging kid, has ONLY 16 months experience as a US Senator, before declaring his candidacy. And thinks OUR country "OWES" him, the Presidency of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! Because he is black! Walter Williams is a true "Blackman", and would make a great President. But Walter doesnt think he is owed the job, because of skin color! NObama has NO respect for our FLAG, our NATIONAL ANTHEM, or CONSTITUTION. And is making a mockery, out of the Presidential Seal. What is next?? The media has in in the tank, and lets him get away with it. WAKE UP FOLKS!! I am not happy with McCain. But I know he will SUPPORT our military/country, and FIGHT terrorism! Americans would be wise to look at Obama very closely and carefully. Considering his lack of experience and other drawbacks, it would be a tragedy for our country to rush to support him just for his good manners, good looks, and deep and resonant speaking voice. A fluent speech-maker does not a president make. As a Texan, I can tell you that W is not dumb. Far from it. One can't be "dumb" and run a state like Texas. It is only provincial Easterners who are so self-centered that they label him thus, failing to even check into what he has done to make him quite smart. Provincial people, who have never been west of the Mississippi confuse a southern accent with being dumb. Been there and done that. I'm back in Texas, drawl and all, leading the life of an educated person, smart, but not brilliant.

First off I am a Ron Paul supporter. Second.. Look...he did not create the seal design his campaign staff did or hired someone to do it. Politicians rarely have a creative bone in their body. Sure the seal is arrogant and presumptuous but it does not mean he is. These candidates often pay big money for these "experts" and if someone who hired experts to make decisions and if a candidate keeps putting his input he is defeating the purpose and risking alienating his staff who should if their good know what they're doing. So candidates often leave it up to their staff and "experts" they pay good money for to do a good job. And sometimes they do not. I personally do not think it is fair to call Obama arrogant on the basis of this seal which I doubt he took the time to design. I mean for all we know this could have been campaign sabotage via a mole from McCain's people (which McCain might not even have knowledge of either).

Stealing the Seal of the President and putting the Obama 'logo' into the center of the eagle instead of the 'shield' of the American Flag is quite disturbing. Obama obviously thinks it's OK to steal an icon and make it his without any qualms. Arrogance is not the word — it's theft. I guess people in Washington are used to stealing what belongs to 'the people', so they think it's OK. Change we can believe in?
