Investigators from the state prosecutor’s office raided the home of Mayor Sheila Dixon early Tuesday morning, leaving hours later with six boxes filled with documents as part of an ongoing City Hall corruption probe.

The early-morning raid marked the latest chapter in an ongoing state investigation into corruption at City Hall that sources said focused on Dixon’s ties to several city contractors.

The mayor, who was home with her two children when state troopers arrived around 6:30 a.m. in several unmarked vehicles, said she didn’t know why her home was being searched. She left in gym clothes, returned with her daughter, and eventually left again while investigators searched her home for more than seven hours.

“Don’t ask me any questions,” Dixon told reporters, “ask them,” referring to the investigators.

Dixon said she is “focused on moving the city forward.”

“I’ve cooperated with them in every way possible,” she said of the prosecutors.

Dixon’s attorney, Dale Kelberman, said authorities won’t find any documents tying Dixon to any wrongdoing with area business leaders, because there is nothing incriminating to find.

“This has been going on for two years now,” Kelberman said. “The state prosecutor has no limitations on the exercise of his discretion, except for his judgment. The people of Maryland should ask themselves if they think he’s using his discretion wisely. The state prosecutor has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on investigations that result in nothing. This is another example of that.”

Records show the office of State Prosecutor Robert Rohrbaugh, who investigates political corruption, opened 84 corruption cases in fiscal 2007, but sought charges in only seven cases.

Two Dixon associates have pleaded guilty in the two-year  probe, which began amid allegations of conflict of interest between Dixon and her sister, Janice Dixon’s former employer, Union Technologies, also known as Utech.

Utech’s owner, Mildred Boyer, 42, pleaded guilty in March to filing a false tax return for 2003.

In September 2007 former Dixon aide Dale Clark, 45, pleaded guilty to failing to file state tax returns. Like Boyer, he agreed to cooperate with prosecutors.

Rohrbaugh refused to comment on the investigation. City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake did not return a phone call seeking comment.
