Daly drops bill for housing on Treasure Island

SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - Supervisor Chris Daly tabled legislation Tuesday that he had proposed to increase to 50 percent the amount of below-market-rate housing offered in the planned major redevelopment of Treasure Island.

His decision to drop the item comes a week after another housing measure he backed at the polls suffered a decisive defeat. That measure, Proposition F, would have required the redevelopment of Bayview-Hunters Point to offer 50 percent of the housing at below the market rate, not the 30 percent as proposed.

The developer, Lennar Corp., along with Mayor Gavin Newsom, slammed the housing requirement, saying it would kill the redevelopment altogether. Voters apparently agreed.

“I thought that it would be appropriate to move the item along with Proposition F. So I, for now, defer to the voters,” Daly said, adding that his measure was “swamped with gobs of money from Lennar.”

Daly pulled the legislation during Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, avoiding what was expected to be a defeat.

“We are like in the first quarter in terms of the debate and the discussion,” he said. “Today is not the day to push that vote politically.”

How about using that money to fighting crime where we live? Its really sick how out of touch you are with the same people you claim to represent...what did you get like 8,200 votes ? How many people live in area that suffer do to you? Whoever you are recommending to replace you is the person I will go out to try to defeat. On my block, which has kids and many from Filipino community we are tired of what you are doing to us.
