Police probing threats aimed at immigrant advocacy activists

WASHINGTON (Map, News) - Montgomery County police and fire officials are investigating alleged bomb and death threats targeting leaders of a Maryland immigrant advocacy group who operate a day labor center that was set on fire last year by a still-unknown individual.

Mario Quiroz, spokesman for CASA de Maryland, says he and the organization’s vice president, Simon Bautista, received menacing phone calls around 3:20 p.m. on May 18. A voicemail message was also left at one of the group’s offices.

Quiroz said a male voice calling from a Baltimore landline told him, “Don’t be surprised if your places are blown up,” before hanging up on him.

Minutes later, Quiroz said, Bautista received a voicemail in which a similar-sounding male voice hurled racial insults and told him, “Don’t be surprised is there is a [expletive] bullet in the back of your [expletive] brain, for being so [expletive] stupid and helping illegals.”

Group leaders also found a voice-mail left at an office location that told leaders, “Don’t be surprised if somebody blows up your …

facility.”

“My first reaction was, it’s Sunday afternoon, it’s time with my family and this is just proof of intolerance and I should not let it affect me,” Quiroz said. The next day he reported the incident to his bosses, and they asked him to contact the police.

Police officials say they assigned an officer to the case who works with a joint terrorism task force in conjunction with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Kenneth Korenblatt, battalion chief of Montgomery fire and explosive investigations/bomb unit, said they learned of the incidents through the media Monday and sent an official to investigate.

Korenblatt said last year’s fire at a Derwood day labor center has been ruled arson, but not a hate crime — at this point it is a cold case.

“Fortunately it was not a big fire, it just destroyed decking and did not burn the building down,” Korenblatt said.

We have a chance to send a message in November. First of all, get rid of Hoyer and Van Hollen, and the newly elected Donna Edwards from congress. They need to be voted out THIS TIME, not in 2 years. We need to get a candidate NOW to challege Loco Leggett and the rest of the morons on the county council. These illegals need to be sent packing. If they want services, they can get them in their own country. As far as I am concerned, they and their illegal kids can get out of this country ASAP. I'll support more taxes for deportation but nothing else.

Because of Montgomery County lack of enforcement of illegal immigration, a criminal illegal alien was released by Montgomery County while waiting trial only stab another individual. This illegal alien was later captured in Prince William County where we have leadership who are not weak on crime. If this criminal illegal alien had committed the first offense in Prince William County, he would have been held for ICE.

Yeah, Once again Montgomery County elected officials (for lack of anything else to call them and keep it clean) have made the decision for ALL residents in Montgomery County. Once again, we the people do not have the right to speak out an be heard, nor vote on something such as removing illegal aliens from MC. We have to grin and bear the increase in taxes from O'Malley and Leggett and the county council. They see us as an ATM machine

I am an illegal alien and I love Montgomery County. Everything is free here. I have so many free things that I can send 2,000 dollars home to Mexico every month. I get free health care, free housing, free money for food and stuff for my baby. I love it here. Yesterday, I even got a drivers license and registered to vote. I am illegal and I can vote for your President. I love Ike Leggett, and he loves me. He knows I am breaking the law, working for cash only, and paying no taxes. Yet, he keeps giving me free stuff. Next week I am going to move in relatives who are also illegal from Mexico into my house. I don't care about the community because the house is free. My plan is to drive all U.S. citizens out of Montgomery and take it over. You guys are helping me steal your homes, jobs, and government. And they call me stupid??!!!

wow - kind of amazing the idiots who see the words "immigration" and immediately fly off the handle. The point is - the guy is flaunting his association with the police by going around wearing his police credentials on his own time. Presumably it gives him a feeling of authority or something. But police regulations specifically forbid doing that when off-duty at political rallies - same as military personnel are not allowed to wear their uniforms at political rallies. It's a very common rule - you don't ever want to give one side or the other that they have the "approval" by the authorities. The guy broke the rules`- evidently it wasn't the first time - and he was dismissed. Everybody knows idiot wannabes like this guy who try and use their credentials to make themselves special. I say good riddance. This has absolutely nothing to do with immigration - amazing how many people on here think it does.

Ike Leggett's Spokesperson is concerned about using local taxpayer dollars to enforce federal immigration law? SHOULD I BREAK OUT LAUGHING NOW, OR LATER. They're spending $1.5 million a pop in the FY09 CIP budget for "Wellness Centers" to give kids of illegals inoculations so they can go to school. Over the past decade, per pupil spending has gone from $8,000 per pupil to $14,000 per pupil, according to Ike, in part because of children being dumped into the system with a lack of English proficiency, in other words, children of illegal immigrants. They're pumping millions more into Montgomery County's prenatal program, supposably for the needy, but accessed by illegal immigrants to have anchor babies on the backs of our tax dollars. AND THEY HAVE THE AUDACITY TO PLAY THE TAXPAYER CARD!!! Support for ICE operations largely would come out of existing budgets. We need to send IKE's Public Relations man back for training! STOP THE INSANITY, SAVE AMERICA!

Woe be it to the citizens of Montgomery County. All of those illegals freeloading off of the system at taxpayer expense. I don't know what the cost per K-12 student is, somewhere around $10,000 per illegal immigrants student per year, but the taxpayers are the ones picking up the tab. Each illegal immigrant, on average, costs American taxpayers $9,000 per year.

My wife is a legal immigrant from Honduras. She attends a church in Damascus where about 80% are illegal! The pasture used his wife's boyfriends SS# to work, the assistant pasture drives with no car insurance, a congregation in New Jersey networks with them to set up dummy bank accounts using Montgomery County addresses, so the illegals in New Jersey can acquire Maryland drivers licenses, and illegals and Green Card holders alike network and share information about how to conceal the identity of the fathers to take advantage of Montgomery County's subsidized prenatal program run out of Holy Cross Hospital -- the same fathers who are sending thousands south of the border. The house itself is run like a Hotel, with 10-15 cars outside at any time -- and a Church run out of a converted garage in the back yard. Guess what -- the county goes in and asks them to put up smoke detecters and no smoking signs in the Church in a residential neighborhood! Only in Montgomery County!

These people who run the "for illegal" immigration groups are worried their cushy non-profit salaried positions will be lost when the budget is cut. The ESL teacher mentioned would also lose a job if we required English-only and let Spanish speakers learn the way immigrants (legal) from other countries have to learn. If the programs are cut and advocacy groups aren't around to "baby" these people, maybe they'll stop coming here and expecting us Americans to give our hard-earned money to social programs to help out people who have committed a crime (illegally entering our country). Pro-immigration groups are trying to confuse people and call "illegals", immigrants. We don't have a problem with legal immigrants from any country. It's all about "ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS" and the majority are from Mexico and South America. They are the ones who are demanding services that legal immigrants from other countries don't expect or receive.

BTW, My wife is a "legal" immigrant. Given the bureaucracy, fees, and just plain incompetence we have faced throughout the "legal" process, I would've flown her to Mexico City and hired a coyote to get her across the border like everybody else if I had it to do it all over again. As an example, are you aware "legal" immigrants are not even permitted to volunteer their time, such as for charity, until they get work authorization? If they do so and get caught, they could be deported. The "legal" process is punitive, demeaning, and chastening. Must be nice to be illegal...not only are you free of the "legal" process but, you get programs like this that help you find work while my wife had to sit at home and do nothing until the government said it was okay. For a year and a half after she arrived! Then, you'll get amnesty while those of us who follow the "legal" process get nothing but more governmental grief and fees. What a country this is and, what a sucker I was.
