FEAST OF ‘TURANGALILA’
The love story in the Arthurian legend of Tristan and Isolde inspired Olivier Messiaen to write “Turangalila Symphony.” The 90-minute, 10-movement piece highlights the Redwood Symphony Orchestra’s program June 8 at Cañada College Main Theatre in Redwood City.
Written at the request of Boston Symphony conductor Sergei Koussevitzky, the symphony was conducted by the young Leonard Bernstein in 1949.
The title, which combines two Sanskrit words, has various meanings: “love song,” “hymn of joy,” “time,” “movement,” “rhythm,” “life” and “death.”
The composition incorporates Indian rhythms, bird songs and a 12-piece percussion section.
Musical director Eric Kujawsky says, “Although the popular work is a 20th-century landmark, its length, difficulty, instrument requirements and soloist demands make it rarely performed.”
Featured soloists are Daniel Glover, piano, and Mark Goldstein, synthesizer. The concert also features Igor Stravinsky’s “Fanfare for a New Theatre.”
A pre-concert lecture is at 2 p.m.; the theater is at 4200 Farm Hill Blvd. Tickets are $20 to $25 general; $10 for students; free for children under 12 accompanied by an adult. Call (650) 366-6872 or visit www.redwoodsymphony.org.
