Article History BALTIMORE (Map, News) - The man who threatened Gov. Martin O’Malley’s life was freed from house detention Tuesday but cannot possess a gun or be within 500 feet of the governor.
Parkville resident Walter Abbott, who threatened to “choke the life out of” O’Malley due to the governor’s views on immigration, also was given a piece of advice from the judge.
“Don’t send any more e-mails,” Baltimore County Circuit Court Judge Dana Levitz said.
Levitz’s verdict was met with a sigh of relief from Abbott’s family and attorney, who said the 44-year-old construction worker was limited by his ankle bracelet during the 59-day detention.
“It’s been killing me. Now I can finally start rolling in some work,” Abbott said.
The Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Office agreed with Abbott’s plea to be released from home detention, so long as Abbott checks in with the court system, turns in any firearms and keeps his distance from O’Malley.
O’Malley’s office declined to comment.
Officer K.M. Cole of the Baltimore County Department of Corrections said Abbott was an “outstanding participant” in the home detention program.
The psychiatrist’s report stated Abbott “is not assessed to be a danger, on the basis of a mental disorder, to Governor O’Malley or anyone else in the community.”
Levitz agreed with attorneys’ recommendation and removed Abbott from home detention.
A trial date has not been sent, and Abbott has elected to stand before a jury on the charges that could land him up to six years in jail as well as a $5,000 fine.
“For a guy who is self-employed, it is critical for his business that he able to go out beyond normal working hours,” said Frank Arthur, Abbott’s attorney.
Abbott was arrested March 18 after sending an e-mail to O’Malley because he disagreed with the governor’s funding of pro-immigration group CASA de Maryland.
Abbott said in his e-mail: “If I ever got close enough, I’d wrap my hands around your throat and choke the life out of you, you piece of s--- American sellout.”
Abbott was charged with threatening a public official and sending the threat.
He was arrested and originally held on a $2 million bail before it was reduced.
Abbott apologized for the e-mail but has since said his words were not a threat.
Abbott was to go before District Court Judge Bruce Lamdin, but he is suspended for improper conduct.

I am a former construction business owner in Dallas,TX. who experienced the cancerous like growtth of the illegal immigrant. The only difference I was faced with having to tell my workers of many years that we were just not able to compete with the then massive influx of illegals. The year was 1986, yes back then I was writing letters to my then Congressman John Bryant in my district with no solution then to the problem. By virtue of the sheer numbers of their crews and their under-bidding of any job by as much as 70%,I couldn't come close to the bid. Even though I worked for many builders in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area I was told they just had to go with the new workers. Being left out throughout the construction market I had to switch careers to the manufacturing trade. Well after five years this large soap manufacturer consolidated their plants and even opened a new plant, where you may ask? Yes a Mexican bordertown. I will continue the good fight until my nation is restored...And win

Our Maryland taxes are going up, the services are going down, we are bailing out a hospital for $50,000,000 overrun by illegal aliens while the legislature is supporting a $1,000,000 project to help Casa de Maryland build a jobs center. It is a sad state of affairs but perhaps totally necessary. Maryland is a society in denial. Most people don’t know or remember that the World Trade Center was ATTACKED once BEFORE IT WAS DESTROYED. It took an event of that magnitude to get peoples attention. Until Maryland implodes & we need to take it back by force if we have the will to do so, most people wont realize what is happening & get serious. If illegal aliens put as much effort and energy into coming here legally and obeying our laws as they put into their criminal conduct of circumventing the legal system, burglarizing our country and assaulting our citizens, they would be most welcomed with open arms.

I am so embarrassed to be an American let alone a citizen of Maryland today! How ignorant can we get? All of the comments about illegal immigrants, losing jobs to foreigners, etc...are all on the mark but that really is not the point here people! There is a right way and a wrong way to effect change in this country. The right way is to change the laws...vote for good representatives in government, actively participate in the community, etc....the wrong way is to threaten someone, anyone with bodily harm! Let's stop feeling sorry for Mr. Abbott...what he wrote is wrong and he deserves to be punished! Shame on the Sun to continue to play the sympathy card on this one...that is what is wrong with America today...we allow the media to tell us what to think and ignore the fact that we are a nation of laws...if Mr. Abbott's actions are condoned, then he is and we are no better than the terrorists we claim to be fighting a war against in Iraq and Afghanistan.

if someone not citizen of america come here via illegal entry they commit federal crime. penalty for crime is deportation yet america does not enforce law. common sense tells you lack of enforcement of federal law teaches people they will not be punished if they want to break federal law. if american citizen who is victim of joblessness caused by taught behavior expresses anger felt by 81% of america, same american citizen is arrested with $2 million bail charge. how is possible in great country like united states that 20 million people not of this country permitted to break law & one citizen expressing view of 81% of citizens punished. in america statemen voted into office represents will of american people. american representatives today are not representing will of united states citizens. Why? to even debate anything with word illegal in it that has established law assigning required penalty for violation seems to lack rational thinking and common sense

We see the rampant illegal alien crime, the anchor babies, the drug dealing, the murders, the rapes, and we ask, what is going on? Why are my tax dollars supporting these people? Why is my government giving them a driver’s license when they are here illegally? Why should I pay to educate, house, provide health care for, and jobs for these illegal aliens? Last fall, a Washington Post poll found that about half of Maryland residents considered illegal immigration a problem and that Marylanders called it a "very serious" problem. Eighty-five percent of those surveyed said they wanted state and local government to take an active role in dealing with the issue.

Casa de Maryland distributes guidebooks instructing those targeted by federal immigration agents during job-site raids not to cooperate with authorities if they are arrested or detained. The 8-page, 2-color illustrated book lists what rights "people who are not United States citizens" have if detained by immigration agents, details what to do if served with a warrant or charged with a crime, & urges them to remain silent if they are arrested. The book says they should refuse to provide authorities with any information about their immigration status & thanks to Governor Owe Malley & his MD Political Pariah cronies, tax monies collected from the legal MD taxpaying citizens were & are currently given to Casa de Maryland-According to the 2004-2005 annual statement of Casa de Maryland, 51% of this group’s $2.7 million budget came from grants issued by Montgomery County, Md., the state of Maryland & the federal government.

Legal American citizens know there are consequences to our actions. Our parents taught us about consequences & our state & church have re-enforced this very important life lesson of consequences.I am incensed that aliens who are in this state & country via improper entry do not pay consequences because Federal & State Administrations choose not to enforce the law.The approximate 20 million aliens in this country via improper entry will beget generations who will have been taught that committing a federal crime entitles them to an all expenses paid existence in America, paid for by legal taxpaying Americans & immigrants who ARE held to obeying the laws of Maryland & the U.S..For those who comprehend the impact of generations not being taught this very important life lesson of consequences, no further explanation is necessary, for those who choose not to comprehend this impact, no explanation will ever be possible. Is state funding of Casa de Maryland a recent event? Their Web site says they were founded in 1985. O'Malley has been governor for a little over one year. If it should turn out that CdM received ANY state funds between January 15, 2003, and January 17, 2007, I hope the high school dropouts who post here are willing to chow down on a big helping of crow. Another interesting item from their Web site: the number of prominent Republicans (Barbara Bush) and big businesses that are listed as donors. Republicans don't want to solve the immigration mess any more than Democrats do: the corporations that traditionally donate to Republican candidates have gotten fat and happy on cheap labor.

Mr. Abbott should not have threatened the Governor. That said, Governor O'Malley should pardon Mr. Abbott before wasting money and prison space prosecuting him. Keep his gun, make him go through some red tape to get it back, and then drop the matter. Hopefully the Governor will learn people are mad at his policies and budget. There is no reason CASA de Maryland should receive state funds. Did the Irish or Germans receive state assistance when they came over? No! Should illegals be deported? Not necessarily. They should be allowed to stay if they've been here for a year, have kept out of jail, and are being productive in the same way as American citizens. If they meet these criteria, make them citizens and have them pay taxes. That's a whole lot cheaper than deporting them and the United States gets some decent new citizens.

Michele I say things like "I'm gonna kill that guy" all the time. But anyone who writes it down and mails it to the governor is either criminal, crazy, or just too stupid for words. Why was he arrested? Because it's REALLY not in Mr. Abbot's interest for the state police (who work for Mr. O'Malley) to decide which of the three is true. So they go thru the formality of checking him out, filling out the paperwork, and turning him over to a judge. The judicial branch is theoretically impartial (in the sense that O'Malley can't fire judges), and this is very much to Mr. Abbott's benefit. In most countries in the world where someone does this, they just get "disappeared." Instead a judge will rule on which of the three labels applies to Mr. Abbott, and I think we all know that eventually the judge will come around to choosing door number three. Abbott will remain a hero to small-minded people who believe that death threats are okay as long as they come from "our" side, and life will

There was an earlier blog that suggested that maybe the Catholic Church could get involved and assist Mr. Abbott, but that blog has no longer on this site. Maryland Catholics need to know & understand that the Catholic Church chooses not to differentiate between legal & illegal immigrants & considers both legal & illegal immigrants as immigrants or migrants. From birth, free for any illegal that goes into a hospital in America, through Head Start & higher education, through all the welfare systems, Catholic Charities USA is there to lobby our lawmakers. The Catholic Church takes credit with inventing the City of Sanctuary program for illegal aliens and employs well-paid lobbyists to knock on congressional doors to secure taxpayers funds for this branch of the church known as Catholic Charities.

Look what HO-MALLEY has done to people like Ed Norris and other people he did not get along with, he strongarmed them and forced them out, he is a criminal a thug and I'm glad the guy said what he said.

I must have missed the Declaration of War enacted by Congress. Can someone please identify the date of the declaration and the nation we are at war with. While the President is the Commander in Chief, Declaration of War is a power reserved exclusivly for Congress.

I think you should all chill out. Criticizing O'Malley is not a good idea unless you want a visit from the Maryland Gestapo. How about a "free Walter Abbott" movement? Maybe we could get Cardinal Keeler involved? He's a big fan of convicted murderers, so a "political prisoner" shouldn't be a stretch for him. Mr. Abbott will get a "show trial" and be found guilty and sentenced to the Maryland Gulag. He will die in prison, mysteriously hanged in his cell. O'Malley will continue his support for murdering innocent fetuses while working to end the death penalty for contract murderers. Maryland, the stupid, backward little state!

Integrity, the men at Gitmo are enemy combatants. In the Geneva convention rules of war, enemy combatants are detained, without trial, for as long as the war continues. To give these men trials in the American courts system is something never afforded to any POW in any of the wars we've had before and would set a chilling example for future POW's. As for this guy, regardless of how you feel about elected officials, it is illegal to make threats on their life. Mr. Abbot sounds like a small minded person (based on his interview responses) who is scapegoating illegals for his misfortunes. I am very opposed to illegal immigrants and would like to see government at all levels enforce laws already written to make it difficult for illegals to obtain jobs in America. However, I also understand supply and demand and know that if I am charging more for my services than the market will bear, someone else will get the job. Mr. Abbot chooses to stand on his principle and will pay the pri

Then men at Gitmo have not been tried in any court, at least Abbott will get his day. Someone who threatens the life of an elected official in the United States could easily be classified as a terorist because his threat is meant to terrorize.

We have a legal immigration & naturalization process. It violates every rule of fairness & equal treatment to treat those who sneak into our country preferentially to those who respected our laws at the outset. Legal immigrants oppose illegal immigration and the following is taken from the website You Don’t Speak for Me “American Hispanic voices are being shouted down by the hate & race-directed rhetoric of those who do not appreciate the laws of our country. We of You Don't Speak for Me! give voice to those without a voice & those whose opposition to illegal immigration is drowned out by illegal aliens & their supporters marching in the streets demanding undeserved "rights" of U.S. citizens. We are standing together to say to the those who come here illegally & those who would give amnesty to those who have broken our laws, you are wrong & you should not be claiming to speak for all American Hispanics. You Don't Speak for Me!“.

integrity (HA) the enemy combatants in Gitmo, cuba are terrorists. They deserve no rights at all. The political prisoners in Cuba are the people castro put behind bars. The US can't give them any rights. Please try to get it right next time you put in your 2 cents worth.

It is a good thing for lee greenwood that there was a photo with the story. Obviously the guy can't read. I guess someone explained what the article meant and then wrote something for him. To be fixated on the photo is just plain stupid.
