Baltimore County deputies shoot, kill armed man at Lansdowne home

BALTIMORE (Map, News) - Baltimore County sheriff’s deputies fatally shot a man Thursday after he answered the door of his Lansdowne home holding a gun, police said.

Four deputies were serving a civil warrant on Wayne K. Hicks, 53, at his house in the 2200 block of Gaylawn Drive around 2:30 p.m. when they saw the gun and opened fire, said police spokesman Bill Toohey.

Toohey said Hicks was shot in the stomach, though he did not know how many times or how many shots were fired.

Hicks died at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, Toohey said. Court records show Hicks had a pending child-support case in Baltimore County Circuit Court.

Across the street from Hicks' home, Bob Mondo, 63, recalled hearing shots.

“I heard four bangs,” he said. “I thought they were firecrackers. My cat jumped up. We don’t usually hear gunshots around here.”

Mondo and other neighbors said they did not know Hicks.

“I see him cutting his grass,” Mondo said. “He lives by himself and he stays by himself.”

Mondo also said it was hard to tell the deputies were law enforcement by their uniforms.

“They didn’t look like police,” he said.

Neighbors described the street of single-homes as quiet and safe. One said he’d never even seen the police on the street.

“This stuff normally doesn’t happen around here,” said Betty McDowell, who added the 2200 block is a great spot to take kids on Halloween.

“They have the best candy,” she said.

Toohey said sheriff’s deputies receive the same firearm training as police.

Baltimore County police are investigating the shooting, he said.

So a month later anyone heard the outcome, other than the house for sale?

Mr. Hicks would have never answered the door in a violent manner knowing that the intruders were police. He was a very strong advocate of the police. As someone else said, he was shot through a window and never even made it to the door. I am glad some of you feel it is great that four deputies got to go home to their families, what about the children and grand children who will never get to see their father or grandfather again. Gun or no gun in hand this is a blatent case of police brutality. Follow up and read the article in Sundays Baltimore Sun, Baltimore police have killed as many people as the Los Angeles Police. L.A. has a population of nearly 4 million people. Stats overwhelmingly prove the Baltimore Police, or Sheriffs if we need to be technicle, need to be re-trained. This was an innocent man, father, grandfather and brother.

No, I wasn't there. But he never made it to the door. He did have a gun in his hand, have 4 guys dressed casually banging on your door and not identify themselves and see how you answer the door. They shot him through a window and one person was in his backyard and shot through the back. You don't know the guy, he wouldn't have pointed it at them unless they were criminals. He was caught off guard and just protecting what was his.

I beg to differ. And rather than dispute online I would like to see you at any of the law enforcement meetings and we can discuss facts! In Baltimore city/county the Police handle criminal activity and issues on the street and the Sheriff's dept handle court issues like summons and such. Both are law enforcement and both deserve much credit for a good job However neither are perfect and I truly believe that this was a goof up. I find it very hard to believe that this particular person was aware that these were law enforcement. In many other towns the Sheriffs are in charge of everything.. not so in large metropolitan areas. And guess what there are even other agencies that work the law around here and they carry guns TOO! So it isn't just a cut and dry situation.

7:30, the sheriffs didn't shoot him for "standing there". Baltimore County Law Enforcment has never had a bad shooting. The man had a gun, and he was shot. Period, end of story.

He did not answer the door with a gun in his hand. He was shot while standing in his own house going to the side door to verify that the people were at the door that they said they were. Also, his kids were 33 and 29. Some child support, huh!!

Probably never hear the outcome of this one. The guy had no local family to speak of, was a yes Mam no Mam type person, living on the Baltimore city line with prostitutes and the 95 corridor out side his yard. Anybody seen the guys in Baltimore county or city who serve these warrants. I used to serve them coffee, don't look like no cops or sheriff unless ya read the back of their coat. So sad. Another innocent mistake I guess.

Give the Sheriff involved a raise. It is a hard job that someone had to do! It is be killed or kill. So now Tohey speaks for the sheriffs?

Thats what you get when you are a racist cop, most likely on trigger happy, running your mouth and a gun facing you. No law and order. The cops play dumb, however they deserve no raise. Go around with a quick trigger, an unpaid fake degree and you have nothing. If they came clean to start with a stun gun a job would have been better served. Rumor has it, cops make a bad name for years slandering the government and being racist. Drug test them every year or make it legal to pay decrease. This warrants a change in the law and training that has been over due.

...there's always at least one idiot out there that claims excessive force. Here's a clue...every person out there knows that if the police see a gun, you stand a good chance of being shot, and it's basically because the police don't want to get shot.. Dont' want to get shot??? Don't answer your door with a gun in your hand. Period. What do you propose the police do? Wait to get shot first? "?" watches too much TV, and like most, is clueless as to what is going on in the streets.

Excessive force? Don't we hav e a right to have guns in our homes? It does not say he pointed it at anyone, only that he answered the door holding one. Cops need training, lethal force seems to be the only answer to every situation. This should not be. Don't speculate.
