BALTIMORE (Map, News) - An Examiner photographer, on assignment for a school-violence special report, told police a student assaulted her Thursday morning outside Reginald F. Lewis High School, the same school where art teacher Jolita Berry was viciously attacked by a student earlier this month.
Arianne Starnes, 24, said she was thrown to the ground after a student came out of a group of about 20 other students and accused her of taking his picture.
For Berry, who has filed second-degree assault charges against her alleged attacker, this wasn’t a surprise.
“That’s exactly what teachers have to put up with,” Berry said about Starnes’ allegation. “You see what I mean? That’s how they are. It’s just crazy. I’m not surprised, but I think it’s horrible.”
The student allegedly grabbed Starnes’ cameras, tugging at the straps and threatening her. After a struggle, Starnes was pushed backward to the ground. She fell on her cameras and immediately stood up but was again confronted by the student, who this time pointed his finger at her head and pretended to shoot her, saying “I told you not to take a f------ picture.”
Starnes, who repeatedly told the student she did not take his photo, said there were no teachers or school supervisors present, but several students had posed for pictures and had given their names prior to the incident.
“The whole thing was unsettling,” Starnes said. “They were laughing and joking. No one was trying to stop it.”
After the attack, the student removed a blue bandana from his head and entered the school.
School police came to The Examiner’s offices on Pratt Street on Thursday afternoon to take Starnes’ statement, and an investigation is under way.
Calls to Reginald Lewis High School Principal Jean Ragin were referred to the Baltimore City Public School System’s North Avenue headquarters.
“We take any interaction on school grounds involving our students extremely seriously,” schools spokeswoman Edie House Foster said. “We expect appropriate behavior from our students on and off school grounds.”
The incident with Berry made national news when a video of her assault was posted on YouTube. The video shows a female student sucker punching Berry in her classroom, then straddling her and hitting her in the head while students cheered.

If this punk had been arrested for running a car into a police car....what in the hell was he doing at this school? What responsibility does the principal have?

While I agree with you that Black people need to take responsibility for their actions and communities, I disagree with your remaks regarding the Asian and Latino communities, or have you fotten about MS-13, Los Votos Locos, and the plethera of other organized gangs in Northern VA, Mont. Co., DC and PG Co. Let's not draw straws. I also would like to point out that most of the Latinos in the surrounding communities do not pay income taxes as they are undocumented. they are employed by unscrupulous people who have taken advatage of the fact that they are willing to work for less because of their situation. No "affirmitive action" needed. I'll wager that if these same people had to find legitimate employement, they too would cry out for some sort of affirmative action programs.

No one needs permission to take photos in public. These "kids" were milling about rather than going to do their homework. Feaster was just released ONE DAY earlier before committing yet another crime. The reporter did not make him a criminal. His family made him that way and the black community tolerates it by not policing itself and getting rid of the bad element. No one can fix the problems of black America until black Americans stop trying to place blame on everyone else and alleged "racism". Latinos and Asians seem to be doing just fine without affirmative action, by emphasizing family, education and respecting the law.

first the fact that the young man may have been a 5th yr freshman has nothing to do with the matter. atleast he was still in school trying to get an education. next ru saying mickey because he has a pending charge he should not have the right to be in school? him having a pending crimnal case should have nothing to do with this case. becasue if thats what you are saying i guess those officers who shot at those 3 young men in new york...killing one on his wedding day was ok because those whom where with him had crimnal backgrounds. in my opinon if the young man had nothing to do with the story she had no right to take any pics of him. the reporter should have respected his request when he first asked her to stop taking pics of him. people want respect but don`t want to give it...what happened to his right to privacy ? i do agree with everyone with the fact that he should have not put his hands on the reporter but sometimes just a lil respect goes along way. :)

Mickey... I don't think you have the background on this so you are uninformed on what happened. The journalist was not randomly taking pictures, it was an interview where she did interview some kids and took some pictures... its not like she just walked up and started takings headshots of these kids. And how in the world can you blame her for this kid already having a record and acting like a punk by trying to grab her camera? Last time I checked, you can't just take peoples things or touch them just because you want to. As far as what grade he is in, I am betting he is probably a 5th year freshman. You are saying its OK to react violently to something you don't like? I don't like that someone cut me off in traffic, should I pull them out of their car and beat them senseless? Oh, and the lady that paid in all pennies at the store yesterday - I didn't like that either - I should have smashed her friggin head into the counter, right? Mickey, get real.

First off lets get something clear. I did not say that what he did was right. What I was saying that it All could have been avoided. So please do not not put words in my mouth. And by the way I'm not black. You people kill me. Not even reading my comment correctly. So for the person that wrote that comment I pray that you can be a better person in side and out :)

Mickey is so far off base. The photographer was on public property, not school property. No permission is needed from anyone to take pictures on public property. As far as bring up a person's past, one must ask why this boy was allowed to be near a school with a pending drug charge.

Mickey is justifying the attack because a photographer was doing something perfectly legal. She didn't add any black youths to the jail system; the black youth that attacked someone and tried to rob them added a black youth to the jail system. Just another example of African-American's not wanting to take personal responsibility for their actions. Mickey. Which one of your kids attacked attacked that woman on the bus?

You know I am getting so darn tired of people taking things so far. Okay she was pushed and she hurt her finger. But did see even ask anyone at the school was it okay to be out there taking pic of theses kids? No ! of course not. So ask me this The so called rigthoues people of Maryland that think that all inner city kids are thugs? If this woman came up to you kids school taking pic without the consent of the school how would you feel? And yet another thing why is it that everytime a black person gets in trouble you have to dig up the past? One has nothing to do with the other. So I hope that she is happy that she has now that she just added another black youth in the wonderful baltimore jail system. Where i'm sure he'll get the best out of life. But the way how the finger and camera for a young mans life?

I bet "no one saw anything" either when the school does decide to do an investigation. This is just getting out of hand with the kids now a days. This is not only happening in the city but also in the county system, you just don't hear about it as often. What happened to parents whipping their child's tail when they showed lack of respect to another adult? Or the " Paddle" in the principle's office? Maybe it is time for parents to stop letting their kids run their lives and act like parents! you can point the finger at the city all day long but if the parents are showing no respect then why would you think their kids would? When a child acts like this, not only shoudl the child face charges but their parents as well. Every day people doing their jobs should not have to worrry about some thug jumping them in the process.

Forget trying to TEACH kids...they can't even keep the schools safe. Alonso is all lip service. Get the violent/disruptive kids out of the schools and into vocational training. Give the kids who want an education an safe atmosphere where they can thrive. Stop worrying about "all" kids and just concentrate on the ones who show promise, and cut loose those that are simply marking time until they wind up in the penal system.

If we didn't have such a namby-pamby society, we would bring back the old St. Mary's Industrial School for kids like these. What they need is discipline, order, higher expectations for themselves, and respect for others--all of which they are not getting from their parents, their schools, and every bleeding-heart ACLU-type policymaker and politician who thinks "imposing" values on children is more aggregrious than using values and discipline to turn them toward a good, constructive, more abundant life. We've removed God and the search for absolute values out of the center of our society--replaced it with instant gratification of animal desires (after all, ahem, we are just highly-evolved animals and nothing more, right?)--and created a new age of barbarism right in our midst. Way to go, social engineers! What a "Great Society" we have!

"The Wire" was the worst thing to happen to Baltimore schools. Now, because these kids can't separate reality from fantasy, they all think they're actors in a movie. Wake up kids, this is real life and there are no dress rehersals -- You're only screwing yourselves with this thug mentality.

It just goes to show how bad things are in city schools. The people in city hall just close there eyes and pretend it is not that bad. The city help create the the problem and have nobody else to blame. They need to stand up and clean house.
