BALTIMORE (Map, News) - Baltimore police say they believe an intruder was responsible for the stabbing death of an elderly woman in North Baltimore Monday.
Police say they were called by neighbors who heard screaming to the 200 block of West 31st Street at 5:30 a.m., where they found Nancy Schmidt, 74, suffering from multiple stab wounds in her home.
“We know she had some type of intruder in the house,” said police spokesman Agent Donny Moses, who added detectives had no immediate suspects and know of no motive.
At Dizzy Izzie’s, bartender Jen Gray said the neighborhood, next to Wyman Park and Johns Hopkins University, “is getting better” but noted she still sees flashes of violent crime.
“It’s crazy what happened to that lady,” Gray said. Neighbors and relatives told WJZ that Schmidt was a kind woman who looked out for others.
“She was a really good, giving woman,” said postal carrier Larry Dammons. “... Her husband just passed about two years ago. He was blind. She was taking care of him.”

The violence of today is the result of the drug culture of the 70s, jobs leaving Baltimore, and rap music. Drugs and rap music have created a generation that have no decency. Pregnant mothers listen to vulgar rap music and play it around their children from the time they are born. These children and their mothers use profanity regularly. The 70s generation established the attitude that illegal drugs are OK. Thus, you have a generation that has been raised listening to rap music and using drugs. The lost of jobs in Baltimore dating back to the 70s has created hopeless poverty in the city. Combining these 3 factors and you have a social disaster. If education is the key to changing people's lives, how can Baltimore have so many colleges and so many dropouts ? With the combined brain power in Morgan, Coppin, Loyola, UM, Hopkins and the remainder of its 15 colleges, Baltimore should have the most intelligent and employable population in the country. Companies should be flocking here.

Do not move to Baltimore City. The neighborhood may be nice but 1 block over is ghetto. This has to be expected these days in Baltimore, no matter what neighborhood. A nice house means nothing when 1 block away is Baghdad.

Some of the people who live in this city are no better than wild animals. Dogs act better. How dare they share a city with law abiding, decent people. You can thank our laws and social services for NOT taking young people out of destructive homes early on. If we removed these kids from an environment with bad influences we might actually get a crop of young adults/adults who know how to behave properly in society. I'm sure they're behavior, however, is the fault of some teacher or other demographic altogether-or at least that's what some people would want us to believe.

Maybe I am misunderstanding the Baltimore City policy on prosecuting murders. Will the murderer of this poor woman be prosecuted even though there were no 2 witnesses?

If this intruder had knocked on her door and asked for help, or for anything she had, she probably would have given it to him. I'm praying that she is with her husband again.
