BALTIMORE (Map, News) - A Baltimore City man brutally beaten into a coma during an unprovoked attack nearly 10 months ago has died at 28.
Zach Sowers, whose assault typified the random nature of urban crime, passed away about 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to a Web site run by Sowers’ friends and family.
“It is with great sadness that I write to tell you that my close and wonderful friend, Zach Sowers, passed away [Tuesday] after a long and steady decline,” the Web site, zachsowers.com, states. “Anna [Sowers’ widow] called me today to tell me that he passed away peacefully .... Zach is now at peace after a long and treacherous battle. He was so strong and fought until the very end but it provides comfort for us all to know that he is now in heaven, watching over his friends and family.”
Sowers was beaten into a coma during a street robbery June 2 in Canton — and had remained in what doctors call a persistent vegetative state. Because of a plea deal cut with Baltimore City prosecutors, the teenagers responsible for Sowers’ death will not face murder charges.
After the assault, Anna Sowers took on an activist role, speaking out against crime, and is working on a bill that would allow prosecutors to charge suspects with murder if their victims have been beaten into a coma and remain in a persistent vegetative state for more than four weeks.
Sowers said she also is planning a civil lawsuit against the four teens sentenced in her husband’s beating.
Trayvon Ramos, 16, was sentenced to 40 years in prison. Ramos’ co-defendants — Eric Price, 17, Arthur Jeter, 18, and Wilburt Martin, 19 — each received eight years.
“Anna has told me that she and the family are doing as well as can be,” the Web site states. “They have a strong network of friends and family supporting them and ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.”
Memorial services will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Stauffer Funeral Homes in Frederick. Funeral services are planned for Saturday in Circleville, Ohio, Zach Sowers’ birthplace.
Click here for information about donations, “which will be used for The Zach Sowers Brain Trauma Research Fund at Johns Hopkins and/or continuing legislative efforts for Zach’s Law,” according to the Web site.

I'm sad and disappointed to hear about this, but unfortunately I am not surprised. It's no secret that crime in Baltimore City is out of control. It seems like nobody wants to face the truth, which is that all the money and programs in the world will have no effect on crime. It is a matter of lifestyle choices. I am a young African American man and I have absolutely no sympathy for people that commit these acts. It's a slap in the face to everyone that sacrificed to provide opportunity to our generation. Its this type of trash that makes it so difficult for good, honest people. And there are some good honest people in Baltimore. It is sadly ironic that we so deeply understand the significance of equal treatment under the law, and fought and died for that privilege; but there are those who cannot expect to receive the same from us. Someone commits a horrendous crime, but because of his race or his ability to relate to the jury, escapes justice. 1964 or 2008. Any difference?

I am crying as I read this and write this reply. A friend and I were the victims of a racial hate crime last June on Cross St in Fed Hill. We are white, the assailant is black. I was hit without warning and regained conciousness in shock trauma. Stayed there for 3 days and required surgery to put the bones around my right eye back together. The assailant, Jose Seldon, was caught in July. He's a convicted felon (armed robbery) & has a list of other assault charges. With community pressure the police did their job. We did our job by pressing charges & coming forward to testify. An independent witness, a girl working in the shop that night, did the right thing and braved coming forward to testify on our behalf. The jury failed to do its job. The trial concluded on March 17, with a mostly (10 out of 12) black jury, deliberating for less than 30 minutes and finding the defendent not guilty on all counts. I'm from this city, always loving it for what it could be. I had hope; I no longer do

With all due respect, Davis, I have indeed kept a gun with me. Actually one is with me at all times. I would feel like I have done the city a favor by putting a hollow point bullet in the head of one of these lovely city youths. Look at the Virginia crime stats before and after they passed a right to carry law. Criminals know that law abiding citizens will not be carrying guns, why, because it is against the law. In response to your scenario, I would put a hollow point in the head of each "loving youth" who tries to "run up on me" and rob me. Simple as that.

For the reader who said thats a personal issue you must be oblivious to reality and or never have kept a gun with you.Everyone reacts differently when you feel your life is in danger but to have a weapon you could potentially harm others. What if you were walking and some young punks like these guys tried to run up on you and rob you and your first response is to reach for your weapon and shoot, you'd better hope the one you shot and killed was armed because if not and the 3 others stick to a similar story of what happened your going to prison for manslaughter. Now the reverse situation is what if your both armed and he tries to rob you but you and since you have a gun you reach for it and pull it out from under your shirt but in that instance he shoots you and kills you.If he has an experienced lawyer hes going to plead self defense and take a gun charge or take a plea deal of manslaughter. You're fighting a battle you can not win unless others help you to prevent this situation.

You know the best way you can lower a crime rate is by actually encouraing prevention rather than incarceration. Why blame these guys who apparently lost track early in their lives, why not hope the next Tavon or Kevin doesnt do this to another person whether white or black. The first step is already in progress with Alonso improving the school system but the next thing that needs to be done is for people to take to the streets about this crime, everyone continues to hide in their homes and hope the police and city hall do something about this crime rather than doing something yourselves. These criminals are a small minority in Baltimore City, there are much more of us who are doing right, you can not have respect for yourself as an adult when your scared to walk in your own neighborhood.Everyone continues to lock themselves in their homes really and lets these guys recruit and influence others and its all an issue of respect and fear. These guys do what they do because they want to be feared.

Where are the photos is a good question. For the same reason you rarely saw pictures of the pregnant women murdered by her black boyfriend, she was white. The media in Baltimore just hates to report black on white crime. It is exactly why the black thugs who beat the white women on the MTA to a bloody pulp were constantly referred to as "school children", "youths", "middle schoolers" and the like. It was a way to downplay that 20 or so black thugs beat a white women senseless. Lets face it, a middle schooler in Baltimore City might be 18 years of age. Some of those 20 black middle school thugs might have been over 200 pounds, both the boys and girls.

The prosecutor who handled this case should get a medal for getting a 40 year sentence. No plea deal equals JURY trial. Have you ever sat on a city jury? Most unpleasant experience I have ever had. Two of us were for guilty, and 10 others talked about how all police lie, the laws are racist, and how they think they can stick it to the system by finding everyone not guilty. It's almost impossible for the state or police to get a fair trial when jurors behave like that in the city. AGAIN, many jurors in the city have kids who engage in this kind of animal like behavior and they are sympathetic to the criminal not the victim.

His family has gone through an emotional roller coaster over the past months. First with dis-belief that something liek this could happen, Anger, Sorrow, Hope Zak would pull through, Fear of what type of life he would have if he did pull through, Anger again from the minor sentence the youths received etc. The people who did this awful crime are youths yes but again they acted like adults. They knew what they were doing was wrong on every level and they should be punished accordingly. If that means they loose their life, then so be it. Maybe if The City starts punishing youth correctly for their crimes then the message will go out that crimes of these sort will NOT BE ALLOWED IN OUR CITY!

It makes me sad because I have great memories of growing up in Baltimore as a child. Now I'm afraid to walk down the street, and the top officials don't even care. Even though it seemed all along that Zach's death was inevitable, I am shocked and saddened. In fact, the inevitability of his death was so obvious that I have to wonder why the city was in such a hurry to cut plea bargains with these four. Someone please explain how "getting guns off the streets" would have prevented this murder? It's one more example of how depriving people of any mechanical means of self defense (even stun guns in Baltimore City) creates a victim-rich environment in which criminals can work with safety.

Having been a city resident for 7 years, I'm through with Baltimore City! Crime is out of control for decades yet we only have ourselves to blame. For every person who thinks "stop snitching" is ok, who go into a jury refusing to convict based on race alone, who thinks stealing and killing is an acceptable way of life, who think crime won't effect them because they're not into drugs, live in a wealthy neighborhood or even aren't an African American, who take pride in coming from a tough city instead of being ashamed, I say you're reaping what you sow! Even I'm to blame because I threw up my hands and moved to the county. But the fact that there's not more outrage for Zach's death scares me. I only hope that Anna and Zach's family find some kind of peace because they sure as hell won't find it in the justice system or even the social network of Baltimore.
