BELMONT (Map, News) - A 21-year-old San Mateo resident was found dead in his car Friday morning after his vehicle was spotted in the bushes off northbound U.S. Highway 101 north of Marine Parkway in Belmont, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The victim — identified as Nathanael Dodge — hit a Pacific Gas & Electric Co. pole and skidded into the bushes some time before 8:05 a.m., according to the CHP.
A CHP officer traveling northbound on the highway saw the vehicle, CHP Officer Shawn Chase said.
The victim was found dead in the driver’s seat and had apparently been wearing a seat belt.
He was found dead inside the car, a 2005 graphite-colored Mazda 3. The collision caused front-end damage, according to the CHP.
“He had been there for some time because he was cold,” Chase said. “[The car] wasn't visible until daylight.”
According to Chase, Dodge did not appear intoxicated at the time of the accident.
“It looks like a traffic accident,” he said.
The accident did not cause any traffic delays and did not cut power, according to Chase.
Investigators have asked anyone with information to contact the Redwood City California Highway Patrol office at (650) 369-6261.
