Accusations of racism and free speech violations have been tossed between House members following an incident earlier this week in which House Judiciary Committee Chairman Del. Joseph Vallario, D-Prince George’s, shut down the testimony of a woman who had distributed a flier to committee members portraying Vallario in a sombrero with the title “wanted for aiding and abetting” illegal immigrants.
Vallario, who is of Italian descent, according to his colleagues on the panel, reportedly tried to blame the bills’ sponsors, Delegates Warren Miller, R-Howard, and Patrick McDonough, R-Baltimore County, for distributing the fliers, but McDonough said they knew nothing about it.
Now, Miller is calling for Vallario to resign, and McDonough said he will file an ethics violation against Del. Victor Ramirez, D-Prince George’s, if Ramirez doesn’t apologize for describing Miller, McDonough and other bill sponsors as racists in reports on the incident.
“[Delegate Vallario] became a censor of free speech” when he stopped Susan Payne from testifying Tuesday, Miller said. “I would suggest he move to another country and run for officer there. It’s time for someone else to take over [the committee].”
Calls to Vallario were not returned.
Following the incident, Ramirez, a Salvadorian immigrant, described the flier to a reporter as “blatant racism” and suggested it showed “the true colors of the bills’ proponents.”
On Thursday, after learning McDonough would file an ethics violation against him for calling fellow lawmakers names, Ramirez told The Examiner, “putting the drawings that put down an ethnicity are inappropriate as well. ... McDonough has a history of misconstruing opinion with fact.”
The bills being discussed Tuesday would have created penalties for Maryland municipalities that pass laws thwarting federal immigration regulations.
McDonough and Miller both said their biggest concern was that Payne’s right to speak freely during the testimony had been violated, although McDonough did not agree Vallario should be removed as chairman.
On top of her testimony, Payne also submitted dozens of pictures of people who had been either assaulted or murdered by illegal immigrants, all of which Vallario would not allow to be submitted.
Payne said she’s heading back to Vallario’s hearing room next week to testify on other immigration-related legislation. “I’d better get a chance to speak,” she said.

Cool it people, Chairman Vallario is the gatekeeper for the Democrats and some Rhinos. He stops any proposed legislation that is not part of the socialist agenda. He is just doing as he is told. His job is to keep this type of bill form ever going forward to the legislature for an up or down vote, with all that vote would reveal about the legislators.

vallario is really out of touch. He created this mess in a speech he made that wound up on youtube. He doesn't realize in this day and age EVERYTHING he says could be put on the internet, to stay there for eons. It is going to be interesting to see what happens next week.

He is truly over the top and is on the side of illegals not us Americans. I call this modern day treason.

Agree with others on this blog: the hat may be over-the-top, but the real problems is that advocates for illegal aliens can't stomach losing. Vallario refused to allow photos of Americans assaulted and murdered by illegal aliens? Screw you, Vallario. Vallario wants to ensure his re-election, even if it requires using bannana republic-style tactics.

You know the modern definition of a "racist"? Someone who is winning an arguement with a liberal! The poster is clever. Maybe a little over the top, but clever. How strongly Vallario & Ramirez responded is the REAL story. Also, writer missed the reference to CASA de Maryland, the pro-illegal group that gets $millions in tax money during a fiscal crisis.

Wow the insensitivity and racist behavior of Vallario is alarming in this manner. Maryland better take a stand against illegal immigration before it is too late. Wait a minute it's Maryland it is too late. Chris Cummings

I was there and gave testimony. Delgates Ramirez and Barnes exposed themselves for the children they are with their sophistry. They are boys among men and it is scary that people actually elected these guys to office. Vallario isn't much better. He has a clear anti-american agenda via his alliance with CASA of Maryland. I think the bill will pass. Afterall its common sense. A Sanctuary City has it's basis in lawlessness, so any criminal illegal aliens who have committed murder, sex offenses, whatever are going to go there. They are havens for serious criminals and innocent people will get hurt.

If Chairman Vallario does not resign, he should at least sue himself for slander. What got him so angry was Paine's quoting Vallario to himself from a posting on You Tube where Vallario was advocating illegal immgration. If Vallario doesn't want his words thrown back at him, he shouldn't utter them in the first place. He does have a first amendment right to remain silent. Plus, using his role as committee chairman to remove a citizen giving testimony simply because his hypersensitivity leads him to disagree with some of testimony is reprehensible. At the very least, Vallario should be chastised and made to take a course in voter sensitivity and committee chairman good manners. He is trying to act like the Little King at Burger King.
