Baltimore, the city that could really use a drink

BALTIMORE (Map, News) - For as many drunks we see night after night in Baltimore, it’s surprising there are only four mixed drinks named in honor of Charm City.

Unfortunately, the only one that really stands out is “The Baltimore Zoo” — a mix of vodka, gin, rum, Triple Sec, Southern Comfort Peach liquor, Amaretto almond, grenadine, sweet and sour mix, and of course, a splash of beer. Or to save money, you could just dip your mug into the Inner Harbor and drink that. It probably would taste the same.

There’s also “The Baltimore Eggnog,” which we thought would include at least a sprinkle of Old Bay but turns out it’s just your average eggnog recipe. Then, there’s “The Black Baltimore,” a mix of brandy, black Sambuca and egg whites, (yes, egg whites) and “The Baltimore Bracer,” a similar recipe, except replace the Sambuca with anisette.

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

As everyone knows, St. Patrick came to Ireland to drink mass quantities of heavy stout beers, down Irish Car Bombs and have an all-around good time. Pay tribute to him this St. Patrick’s Day weekend as we are right now — drinking and fighting. (Note to angry e-mailers: Emily is Irish, even when it’s not St. Patrick’s Day.)

» Tour of the Irish Shrine at Lemmon Street: This free tour highlights Baltimore’s Irish landmarks, including St. Peter’s, where Babe Ruth’s original sin was washed away.

» Kelsey’s Pub in Ellicott City: If you can get in, it’s always a good crack.

» St. Patrick’s in the County at An Poitin Stil: If you’re still standing after these four days of eating and drinking, then you really do harken from the Emerald Isle.

» Chuck Brown at Rams Head Tavern in Annapolis: For those who can’t stand the sound of whining bagpipes (Emily), the Godfather of Go Go will funkify your St. Patty’s Day.

» 98 Rock’s Bacon and Beer at Looney’s in Canton: All-day drinking with Mickey, Amelia and Spiegel? Emily says yes please.

» Baltimore’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade: Let’s hear it for the bagpipers, people! They’re Jess’ favorite. Hit up Mick O’Shea’s afterward for live music from Donegal X-Press and to buy your favorite bagpiper a Guinness.

CATCH US IF YOU CAN

We’ll have the blues — the phat blues, that is — on Saturday when the Kelly Bell Band and Carl Filipiak raise the roof at the 8x10. We can almost feel the sweat from Kelly’s dreads.

On March 23, you can catch Jessica camping out at Starbucks anxiously waiting for the good people to open the gates to heaven and make her a Grande Skinny Mocha Latte. You’ll find Emily at any Catonsville 7-Eleven gulping Coke right out of the soda fountain machine. We made it to the end of Lent!
