Article History Bay Area (Map, News) - Local education leaders fuming over possible slashed budgets are ready to take legislators to the school of hard knocks today.
Approximately 100 education administrators and leaders from San Francisco to Redwood City will hop aboard school buses and take a field trip to Sacramento today to meet with local legislators to denounce the state’s plan to cut spending for schools. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed $4 billion in statewide education cuts that have forced local districts to consider laying off teachers and employees, eliminate programs and seek parcel taxes.
In the San Francisco Unified School District, nearly 400 teachers and 140 administrators will be given pink slips Saturday as the district faces a $40 million shortfall.
State Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, who is hosting one of today’s meetings with education leaders, said legislators and administrators will likely discuss raising the amount districts can pull from their reserve funds under state law. Another option is to increase flexibility to spend earmarked funds on general operations, he said. Both moves, he said, would help with cuts.
“No one’s expecting any miracles on Monday but [administrators] are hoping to get information they can rely on as they plan the year ahead,” Simitian said.
The education leaders originally planned on writing letters to their representatives but decided to meet with them personally once they realized the severity of the budget slashing, said Shirley Martin, superintendent of the Millbrae Elementary School District.
SFUSD Superintendent Carlos Garcia and more than 60 educational leaders from The City will visit Sacramento today, said Nancy Waymack, district director of policy and operations.
“It is important for legislators and the governor to hear about how the proposed cuts could affect schools and the impact they will have on San Francisco’s children,” Waymack said.
The Association of California School Administrators is calling on all districts to meet with their local legislators. Some 500 school leaders are expected to visit Sacramento this year, and about 1,000 California districts face budget cuts, said association Assistant Executive Director Julie White.
State Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Mateo/San Francisco, is visiting at least seven Peninsula school districts during the next few weeks and hopes to meet with each district in the region, spokesman Adam Keigwin said.

This article dosen't surprise me, In King George County this last year after the SOL's the sixth grade math teacher said she didn't want to teach anymore and she didn't. It was movies and goof off for a several more weeks until school was out. In fact I can't even figure out what the sixth graders did to get grades the last few weeks of school after the SOL tests. Because I saw no homework or school work.

It's good to see that in times like these, people can put it together. It is a travesty that public schools have to turn to private enterprise just to keep up with where they are supposed to be with our tax dollars to begin with. It really warms the heart to hear how people who care are standing up for the future of mankind.

We see lots of cuts in education but what about California prisons? Are they laying off any prison guards? Let's see lack of education means less people qualified to find good jobs means more criminals means more prison guards.

If the Revolutionaries in the government would have respected the will of, "We the People" and enacted Proposition 187 we may have avoided these problems.

Student truancy is not always caused by the parents/family. Our family is not near homeless, not divorced or any other social reasons that may be common. My daughter began skipping her classes and when I found out and asked her why, she said "because it doesn't matter to anyone at school." She did it because it was easy and she wasn't being called on it. Since then, her school has a new attendance/tardy policy and whenever a student misses even one class, an automated system calls home and leaves a message to that fact. After coming home 3 days in a row and hearing that she was being reported, she realized that someone did care and that it was no longer going to be "easy" to get away with. During the past 3 weeks we have not had 1 call. While in some cases the family life may be the problem, the school administrators need to have procedures in place to combat the problem as well. I'm sure glad my daughter's school did!
