Attack Jonathan Engleke is ready to push his Towson University lacrosse teammates to a quick start this weekend.

TOWSON (Map, News) - Towson University senior attack Jonathan Engelke knows his lacrosse team can’t afford another slow start this week.

The Tigers (1-1) have fallen behind in each of their first two games, including when they surrendered the first two goals in a 10-9 victory over Denver on March 1.

But a similar start today likely means a long trip home when Towson travels to College Park to face sixth-ranked Maryland this afternoon at 1 at Ludwig Field.

Maryland (3-1) is coming off a 13-5 win over Providence on Monday. The Terrapins also have dominated the series against Towson, having won 24 of 29 games. The Tigers, however, have proven they can play with Maryland as they fell behind 4-0 last season, but lost just 8-7.

“We’ve got a lot of confidence in our team right now after a big win over Denver,” said Engelke, who has five goals and two assists this season. “We know that if we stay with them early that we can be in position to win the game this time.”

Maryland continues to rely heavily on its talented freshmen attack of former Boys’ Latin star Travis Reed (12 goals, 1 assist), Ryan Young (6, 5) and Grant Catalino (7, 2). Towson hopes to neutralize the trio by minimizing Maryland’s possessions, making the face offs between Towson’s Mitchell Rosensweig (Pikesville) and Maryland’s Danny Gallagher or Will Dalton (St. Mary’s) integral. Rosensweig has won 20-of-32 faceoffs, with Gallagher and Dalton combining to go 39-for-76 this season.

“By the time you’re in your fourth or fifth game, you’re not a freshman anymore,” said Towson coach Tony Seaman of Maryland’s attack. “Those attackmen can score from anywhere, but they are just as dangerous with an experienced midfield.”

Both teams also are unsettled in goal, and will use today’s game as a step in finding a starter. Towson’s Billy Sadtler and Matt Antol (Loyola Blakefield) have each played a half in both games, with Brian Phipps (Severn) and Jason Carter (St. Mary’s) doing the same for Maryland.

“It’s not an ideal situation, but neither goalie has shown me that they deserve to get all playing time,” Seaman said. “At the same time, neither hasn’t shown me they don’t deserve to be out there right now.”
