SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - A 23-year-old meat packer was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of molesting a 9-year-old girl in South City, authorities said.

Jose Vargas Cortez, of South San Francisco, allegedly molested the girl in South City within at least the last 60 days, police said.

“The [girl] is in good condition and appeared to be in good spirits, despite her ordeal,” a police statement reported.

Cortez was booked into San Mateo County jail in Redwood City, where he was being held on $100,000 bail.

Cortez is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds, according to police. He has brown hair and brown eyes. He was employed at a meat-packing business in South San Francisco.

San Mateo County Child Protection Services Officer Wilfred Herrera and Detective Tom Neary investigated the case.

The girl lived in South San Francisco. Police are withholding other details of the alleged crime and the victim’s information from the public.

My choice would be to remove the criminal element from the city leadership as a start before anyone would notice a reduction in crime on the streets.
