Gas spill closes Hwy 101, Coast Guard on scene

REDWOOD CITY (Map, News) - All northbound U.S. Highway 101 lanes in Redwood City are blocked this afternoon until at least 6 p.m. due to gasoline leaking from a big rig onto the roadway, according to the California Highway Patrol. One southbound lane also is closed.
Crews from the U.S. Coast Guard are responding because the overturned big-rig is leaking gasoline into center divide drains, which flow into the San Francisco Bay.
"Crews are responding to the scene now to assess the situation and see if gasoline has begun leaking into the bay," a Coast Guard spokeswoman said.
The accident between a big-rig and a vehicle occurred at around 1:45 p.m. between the Woodside Road and Whipple Avenue exits, CHP Officer Tracy Hoover said. A Sig-alert was issued at 1:59 p.m.
Gasoline subsequently began leaking onto the roadway from the 26,000-gallon tanker tank attached to the big rig, according to Hoover.
"Gasoline is leaking into the center divide drains," Hoover said.
Officials shut down all northbound lanes and the No. 1 southbound lane while hazmat crews work to clean the spill.
Hoover said it will be two to three hours before the lanes are open.
At least one person is suffering minor injuries, Hoover said.
