If the Ravens hope to finally end their offensive woes, it appears Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Pat Shurmur may be the man for the job.

Shurmur is a strong candidate to become offensive coordinator, given his long relationship with head coach John Harbaugh, sources close to the situation said.

The men worked together from 1999 through this past season, before the Ravens hired Harbaugh last week. Their families are close as well, making a Shurmur a natural fit for Harbaugh, who hopes to hire a defensive coordinator soon.

“I don’t really want to put any names out there,” Harbaugh said. “I think Pat’s a great coach... but I’m not going to give any names. It’s just not fair to those guys.”

Former defensive coordinator Rex Ryan has not heard from the Atlanta Falcons regarding their head coaching vacancy, despite interviewing twice. Harbaugh said he would welcome Ryan back.

Shurmur was in Mobile, Ala., Tuesday along with an Eagles’ contingent scouting players during a practice for this weekend’s Senior Bowl. The Ravens also have a strong presence in Mobile, including general manager Ozzie Newsome and Eric DeCosta, director of college scouting.

Both Newsome and DeCosta were on the search committee that interviewed Harbaugh. The Ravens could meet with Shurmur in Mobile to discuss his plans for the Ravens’ offense.

Eagles head coach Andy Reid has said he did not plan on blocking opportunities for Shurmur, who was a tight ends coach before he was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 1999.

“Pat’s been with me a long time, and if he has a chance to move on in that capacity, I’d welcome it for him,” Reid told the Philadelphia Inquirer this week.

But a report Monday on the Palm Beach Post’s Web site claimed the Ravens were close to offering the position to former Miami Dolphins head coach Cam Cameron, who was fired after the team finished 1-15.

Cameron hired Harbaugh in 1997 at Indiana University to be his defensive backs and special teams coach. The two are said to have a good relationship.

Cameron’s agent, Gary O’Hagan, did not return phone calls.

Cameron’s name briefly appeared as an offensive coordinator prospect for the Ravens last week when the team offered their head coaching position to Jason Garrett. Cameron was the offensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers for five years before coaching the Dolphins this past season.
