BALTIMORE (Map, News) - Let politicians quibble about whether Gov. Martin O’Malley’s budget increase is one of 4.1 percent or 5.9 percent. Suffice it to say, it is too much.
The only thing our governor and General Assembly members need to know is this: It’s not your money.
So when you pass the 2009 budget, remember that most of us you’re taking the money from will be lucky to get a 3 percent raise this year — before taxes.
After bigger payroll deductions for those new taxes and health insurance, and with 401(k) plans tanking along with the stock market, we must budget for massive increases in fuel, food and medical costs. With what’s left, we must pay 20 percent more in sales taxes on almost everything we buy.
Why? Because you refuse to do the hard work of making ends meet, as must citizens and businesses. You refuse to achieve efficiency and cut spending line by line, position by position, task by task, program by program. You do not have to do the hard work because you have the power to tax.
Most of us — your constituents, the 82 percent who do not work for government — struggle every day to make ends meet. We face expenses rising inexorably several orders of magnitude above our ability to increase income.
We do not have the power to tax.
In your special session, you tossed another stone to weigh down drowning citizens and enterprises who needed the life preserver you are bound by oath to provide us.
Whom do you serve, members of the General Assembly? The people? Or is it special interests — the ones who help you to win re-election?
You take more than $30 billion a year from us, supposedly for our own good. Earn it.
The Examiner is going to tell more than 500,000 citizens what you do. On an average day, that’s how many Maryland adults read the five editions of The Baltimore Examiner in Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Howard, Carroll, Baltimore and Harford counties, and The Washington Examiner in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties. Thousands more will read all about it on examiner.com.
Examiner readers not only work more, earn more and spend more than average, they register and vote more. They contribute more. They are more active, locally and politically. They volunteer more. They pay more in taxes, own and run more businesses and make more decisions affecting our state than any other comparable group.
Examiner daily readership equals more than the difference between Democratic and Republican voters in 2006, and number more than a third of the disgusted registered voters who stayed home.
Get it?
More and more voters are giving up on the system as they see Republicans and Democrats alike feeding at the public trough, serving their own narrow self-interests instead of the greater public good.
Over the years, traditional news media have fallen into a trap of accepting the government line without question. Reporters and editors became ensnared by the frame of reference of the very institutions they are supposed to cover.
One reason for The Examiners’ being is to watch government and give citizens the tools to fix it.
That is what America is supposed to be all about.
Last session, The Baltimore Examiner tried to help busy, preoccupied citizens tell those who represent us our priorities. Many responded.
This session, let us try again. Eventually, they will listen. If they don’t, we must fire them and elect fellow citizens who do listen and who respond to our needs.
Tell them now. Focus on the leaders listed here.
Then find your representative and senator at examiner.com and send a clear message: It’s our money.
Speak Up
Here are the leaders who raised your taxes. Let them know how you feel about it:

Erlich caused the damage and O'Malley had to fix it. Maryland was is in a tough situation as are many states with national economic hardships looming. No one has mentioned Bush, our biggest spender. He could have been strengthening states by funding No Child Left Behind and other shortfalls the states now have to pick up. If you go to another state, you'll end up dealing with the same crap. I would surmise that I make less money than a lot of people one this blog and I don't mind paying higher taxes if it's going towards good causes like education, the environment, and smart growth. I much rather give increased taxes to the state than more to the Feds to fund illegal wars and do nothing about critical social issues. USA is loosing it's lead in the world and are falling behind in some areas. Look at the states that are doing well; Massachussettes, Maryland, NY, California, etc. = Democratic states. Now look at the states where conversatives rule. Move to one of those sta

Thanks for your great commentary, Mr. Keegan -- you're spot on! Unfortunately, the state has been hijacked by socialist dopes, as evidenced by posters like Union Man, and I don't see much changing in the near term. Long term of course, the idiocy of the tax and spend philosophy is unworkable, and even people like Union Man who are not equiped to do the "heavy lifting" required to plan years down the road, will decline in number.

It is our money but it is the DEMOCRATS state and don't you ever forget it. You may all grumble and whine but in 2010 you will all line up and re-elect a DEMOCRAT majority again. WHY? Because that's the way God meant ot to be. If you don't like the way the DEMOCRATS run the state you should move to another state. You might be happier and I know the DEMOCRATS will be happier. Life is great if you are UNION.

Relocating the Capital? Anyone think about MOM's latest ploy? He is closing the capital for 'remolding'. Soon he'll be moving his staff back to Baltimore. Think about it, he'll be closer to his base. Next he'll want to change the capital and with this puppets he'll be able to do it! Everyone that voted for him should have there head examined.

Truth be told: most of the support O'Malley and the ship of fools receive is from UNIONS. Truth be told, many union members do not vote along their union party lines. In fact, in Maryland, some jobs require you to join a union whether you like it or not. Basically, you lose some of your salary to pay for pinheads too lazy to get off their own fat arses. These unions do not have to pay taxes; but they secure state jobs so the pinheads can get kick-backs. What to do: repeal the law requiring members to join the unions - allow free work arrangements. Next, repeal the Davis-Bacon Act as it was founded on racism and racism alone. After doing this, the parasites known as MD DEMs will be on fair playing grounds.

Great job at outting these spendthrifts! I have always said that Maryland is not balanced between the parties (Republican, Democrat, Independents, etc). For some reason, the state's constituency thinks that Democrats are pro-people, all the time...Well look at Baltimore City, now look at the state! I have to be called on it that I did vote for O'Malley, I am dissapointed with that vote. But I did vote for a Republican in the Senate, I thought it would be a good balance. Now we have no system of checks and balances in this state, and that is just as bad for us on a local level, as it has been on a national level. You need to mix it up to protect the people. These people have agendas that don't have anything to do with the people. Omalley wants to run for president, he is hoping that "we" will forget what he did to Maryland, just as many of us are paying $500 BGE bills and $3 gas..I won't forget. I won't forget Dixons promise to lower property taxes, I won't forget any of

Thank you, Mr. Keegan, for your comments; but I can assure you, sir, that your comments will fall on deaf ears in Annapolis. The democrat party detests hardworking and law abiding citizens. The democrats also detest and abhor those of us who try to put some money away for a rainy day or for retirement; but unless the voters wake up, it is only going to get worse. A vote for a democrat is a vote for criminals (they protect criminals and hate victims) and increased taxes.
