    WASHINGTON (Map, News) - The news of the untimely death of Redskins star Sean Taylor traveled quickly Tuesday morning. CNN was the first to break the news around 5 a.m. Tuesday, but soon after that local outlets WTOP, WMAL, NBC4, FOX5, ABC7 and CBS9 all were reporting the death of Taylor as the lead news story.

    The Washington sports community had Triple X ESPN, SportsTalk 980 and WJFK-FM all air special shows that allowed Redskins fans to share their thoughts and grief with plenty of thoughtful and insightful talk.

    WTEM’s Doc Walker and Andy Pollin did an outstanding job of getting quality guests along with fielding e-mails and phone calls. The Junkies on WJFK were the first local radio to have an interview with friends of the Taylor family.

    Triple X ESPN used its insider advantage to have some moving clips and interviews with coach Joe Gibbs and a number of players with kudos going out to Larry Michaels, Bram Weinstein and the cast of the John Riggins Show for their quality work.

    Both CSN and MASN showed that, when it comes to local sports coverage, they are the leaders on the TV side. As regional cable networks they have a huge advantage over the tradional news stations when it comes to being flexible.

    CSN really proved that it is the go-to outlet for sports news in the region — spending more than 10 hours on live coverage, which no local TV station can do. Russ Thaler anchored the early coverage and then, after going to Redskins Park for the Redskins Show on the radio, CSN continued to run player interviews and aired the Daniel Snyder-Joe Gibbs news conference live. CSN continued its coverage with extended versions of WPL and SportsNite.

    Kelli Johnson was on hand in Miami, Chick Hernandez was on hand at Redskins Park and both showed genuine emotion when talking about Taylor and their many on and off camera conversations with him.

    MASN aired 6 hours of the special edition of the John Riggins Show and again there was plenty or emotional stories from players, coaches and the fans.

    NBC4, FOX5, ABC7, CBS9 all covered the news part of the story with reporters and sports anchors on the ground in Miami and at Redskins Park. This gave viewers both the news and the sports angles of this complex and tragic story.

    When local news turns national

    Sean Taylor’s death in a Miami hospital made quite a splash around the country.

    The ESPN family of networks, Fox Sports Radio, Sporting News Radio, and Sirius NFL Radio all led with coverage of Taylor’s passing.

    “First Take” on ESPN2 led with Taylor’s death.

    Mainstream news CNN, MSNBC, FOX NEWS, and the BBC all had reports of the violent death of the 24-year-old NFL star.

    Yes, bad news travels fast in the age of instant messaging, and 24-hour news channels. On Tuesday a young man who had made an impact on the Redskins, their fans and football fans league-wide was the latest to have his life cut short.

    What Baltimore really needs is someone who thinks big league and will go after it. Why in all hell would I go to D.C. to see pro sports there for when we could have it here with a new place? For that matter I am not about to go somewhere else just because some stuffed shirt can't think big league. And with a biger and better place we could also get bigger and better concerts here also.     This is the most asinine interview I've read this week. How can he honestly say that minor-league sports won't work in the city when he and Ed Hale are the causes of poor dates being released to previous minor-league tenants. If minor league sports are so bad, then why is the Blast so successful? Because of great marketing and relationship with the arena. If he weren't so hostile to others, then it would succeed. I hope that when the arena gets torn down and a new arena goes in its place, then he won't be in charge of this one.

    I, for one, am estatic that Bob Carpenter is back! I thought he and Sutton did a great job last year as I watched more baseball games last summer than I ever have previously. I definitely enjoy his easy style and the "relationship" between he and Don Sutton. Both guys don't try to make themselves bigger than the game. For the reader who wants Mr. Williams to "educate the public" as to why Bob Carpenter is such a horrible annoucer, I would say it's time to get off the couch every once in a while, maybe join a softball league or something. Sounds like you are watching too much tv!

    Bob Carpenter is horrible. Only by small-market standards can a homer, who spews cliches and exhibits little knowledge of the game, be seen as a good announcer. DC isn't a small market but has no expectations for its sportscasters. Jim, you should be educating the public, explaining why announcers like Carpenter are weak. Instead, you fawn all over them and artificially elevate their status. Carpenter deserved to be fired and his return is a shame.

    Let's hope the Nationals ditch Charlie Slowes for good and hire a first-rate baseball play-by-play man instead. Jon Miller, Joe Angel, Tom Hamilton (Indians)or Harry Kalas would all be a huge improvement. Slowes calls baseball like it's basketball and bogs down his broadcasts with way too many stats.     Is it just me, or is it sometimes tough to see how many people are on base? Sometimes it if theres a guy on first and the little 1st base graphic is yellow, it sometimes looks a bit like the 3rd base graphic is sort of colored in, less so than the 1st base part but more so than 2nd base. It looked that way a few times during the last NYY/Cle game.

He crossed the line and much to my surprise was held accountable. It seems that professional sports figures today are exempt from the rules of normal folks. If you believe for a minute that Michael Vick was unaware of what was going on at his house you're just plain stupid. The term "innocent until proven guilty" has no meaning anymore. These losers talk about being men but when it comes down to it they're just overpaid cowards. Sure, they can beat my a** to a pulp because that's what cowards do. The only thing that they have going for them is their physical prowess. I'm sick of working my butt of trying to makes ends meet and these bozo's get treated like royalty. The only reason you and other announcers defend these people is so you have a reason to get paid.

The dogs discovered on Vick's property may not be PROOF that Vick was involved, but since we are at war based on nonexistant evidence, I'm apt to think the media HAS learned from past mistakes. Vick's denial is like the mom who finds pot in her son's room, and believes he was keeping it for a friend to keep him out of trouble.
