Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is playing his conservative card by raising the abortion issue.

WASHINGTON (Map, News) - Although his conservatism has been questioned on taxes and immigration, Mike Huckabee insists that no other candidate takes a tougher line against abortion, a pivotal issue in the race for the Republican nomination.

The former Baptist pastor says it is not enough to overturn Roe v. Wade, a move that would leave individual states to decide whether to keep abortion legal. Huckabee also wants the U.S. Constitution amended to outlaw the procedure nationally.

"If abortion is a political issue, and that's all it is, then fine, have 50 versions," Huckabee told The Examiner in an interview. "But if we have determined, as many of us have, that it's a moral issue, then you can't have 50 different versions of what's right and what's wrong."

Huckabee likened abortion to suffrage and slavery, issues of such moral consequence that they had to be decided nationally. He said allowing individual states to decide abortion would diminish its importance to the level of speeding laws.

Huckabee said he is "without a doubt" more conservative on abortion than rival Republicans Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, John McCain and Fred Thompson. Many conservatives consider abortion to be the most important issue in the 2008 presidential campaign.

On other issues important to conservatives, Huckabee's credentials have been questioned. He had a mixed record on taxes when he was governor of Arkansas. And he wants to give illegal immigrants a path to citizenship if they pay a fine and admit guilt.

Still, Huckabee gives no quarter on any of these issues.

"In the hierarchy of issues, all the way down to the last one, I'm a conservative," he told The Examiner. "Now there may be somebody who, let's say, is more harsh on immigration than me. But my policy on immigration is very much a conservative one, not even close to a moderate one."

These are Governor Huckabee's positions on illegal immigration from his website. "Securing our borders must be our top priority and has reached the level of a national emergency. The Governor supports the $3 billion the Senate has voted for border security. This money will train and deploy 23,000 more agents, add four drone planes, build 700 miles of fence and 300 miles of vehicle barriers, and put up 105 radar and camera towers. This money will turn “catch and release” into “catch and detain” of those entering illegally, and crack down on those who overstay their visas." Governor Huckabee is also against drivers licenses for illegals and will not tolerate sanctuaries for illegals. He is tough on abortion and tough on illegal immigration but he is not mean.

Mike Huckabee has risen too fast in the Iowa polls to make me comfortable. This is a popular vote more than issue based. I don't think that Huckabee is winning the poll....he is just the Christian Right's "second pick of the litter". Thompson was the chosen heir, but he didn't live up to his birth right and so now Huckabee gets the popular vote. I hoped to get away from popular voting when I left High School. The challenges facing America will not be solved by a charismatic....can sell snake oil to anyone....type. I have to agree with Huckabee being a "good ole boy" and he would be a great neighbor, little league coach, Walmart greeter, football booster, cornhole partner, Pastor, Talent Show MC. I doubt that he is qualified to be a medical surgeon, chemical engineer, Pharmacist etc. I don't believe Huckabee has the strongest resume' for facing the job description for President of the United States. It takes some real background and education to handle such responsibil

My vote will not go to anyone who supports ILLEGAL immigrants. Iagree with the last writer about the illegal influx hurting legal citizens and our economy. I am sick of the politicians who are pandering for the illegal vote. Our forefathers came from other countries the LEGAL way and assimulated into the society by learning the language. WE ARE A GREAT NATION because of this. America accepts legal immigrants with open arms. I have friends who have appliedfor the right to come to the USA legally. It is not fair for others to sneak in and demand rights to which they are not entitled.

Mr. Huckabee has to decide what master he serves. Being a Baptist Pastor, as if there was such a thing as a former pastor, unless one had been caught in a tawdry event, Huckabee hs no problem being "pro-life" and pro-amnesty. What about the quality of life of millions of working men, women and children whose paychecs are choked back because of the downward pressure on wages exerted by illegal alien labor? What about the future of our children whose health and educational resources must be diluted to accommodate illegal alien shildren? When it comes to supporting American families, Huckabee is in the same league as a bomb carrying anarchist. This American Citizen of Hispanic ascendency would not give Huckabee his vote. If the neither party steps up with a candidate that defends American families from the siege that multi-national employers (including ourown) and foreign intruders, I'd rather give my vote to Ron Paul than see it wasted feeding Brooks-Brothers clothed tyrants.
