A man gunned down in East Baltimore on Sunday was scheduled to testify this week in a triple shooting case — in which he was one of the victims, Baltimore prosecutors said.

Carlos Smithson, 22, who was killed on Grogan Avenue at 6:28 p.m., was expected to take the stand today against Vincent Berry, 19, said Margaret Burns, spokeswoman for the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office. Berry is charged with shooting Smithson and two women on the 1300 block of North Luzerne Avenue on April 26.

“It’s too early in the investigation to say if this shooting was connected to his testimony,” Burns said. “But it is a consideration.”

Prosecutors plan to ask for a postponement in Berry’s case, but Burns said the homicide will not deter prosecutors in their case.

Smithson’s slaying was discovered when an officer heard three gunshots and saw people running from the street, said Officer Nicole Monroe, a police spokeswoman.
