From Monday through Saturday last week, undercover officers performed so-called buy-and-bust operations, posing as drug users buying heroin, crack cocaine, methamphetamines and other illegal drugs from street dealers primarily in the Tenderloin, Mission district and the Market Street area.
Of the 103 suspected sellers arrested by police, only 39 listed San Francisco addresses as their residence. The rest were either from out of town or gave no local addresses, Capt. Kevin Cashman with the Investigations Bureau said. The majority of the out-of-towners, he added, came from the East Bay. Cashman said the recent sweep was the latest in citywide police operations cracking down on the drug trade and violence plaguing The City’s streets.
“The street dealers are responsible for a lot of the spontaneous street violence, which could stem from someone fighting over turf or someone robbing ... drugs to support their habit,” Cashman said.
Crack cocaine was the drug of choice among the alleged dealers: 51 of the arrested sold the diluted form of cocaine; 18 of the suspected sellers were on felony probation for similar offenses; 47 of the busts were in the Tenderloin and SoMa areas.
“The bottom line is that we have far too many people involved in the open market of drug sales in the Tenderloin,” said District Attorney Kamala Harris, who added that police performed a similar crackdown in July as well as a Western Addition crackdown last spring.
Approximately 30 officers engaged in the operation, making arrests day and night.
“These [alleged drug dealers] are out there all the time,” said Sgt. Neville Gittens, spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Department.

As I was biking down 17th from the Castro through the Mission, two SFPD cruisers were blocking eastbound lanes on 17th street, and 6 cops were standing over one black man who was not cuffed, sitting against the former car repair place, now asian plastic schlockeria. Some reporter should sunshine SFPD records to see if these dealers are actually commuters or residents. Tim Hettrich is evil, as he shows blatant contempt for civilian political authorith, and is not to be trusted.

It just speaks volumes about the lack of affordable housing in the City. If we had more housing offered at below market rates we wouldn't have to import our drug dealers, a vital part of the econoomy. This could save many hours of commuting to and from Oakland/Richmond and reduce bridge traffic and improve worker morale and productivity. This doesn't surprise me. Since most subsidies go to CEOs who can,Goddess bless'em, afford their Afghani smack we need to help out the entry level salespeople who make SF our little "Amsterdam on the Pacific". Do you really think tourists come here for chocolate and chardonnay? A few maybe but many come for the thrils of Peru/Colombia and Afghanistan/Burma, if you know what I mean. Those countries aren't in SF and don't live here either but they will come. Thank you.

Dealers come to SF because Kamala Harris will not prosecute them. The cops are making arrests like this all the time (maybe not 100 at a time but still) yet Harris will not send them to prison. She lets them plead that they are "users" and not dealers, so they get TREATMENT instead of jail! How laughably idiotic is that? Why doesn't she just wag her finger in their faces and ask them if they promise to not sell drugs anymore?

Is anyone surprised? San Francisco has such a desire to spit in the face of the rest of the country that they make a conscious effort, through their own policies, to attract bums, illegals, criminals, and other undesirables through free handouts, conferred status of victimhood, and hampered law enforcement. The people get what they deserve...
