After a decade headquartered in San Francisco, KMKY 1310 AM relocated to new digs at 963 Industrial Road this month. Six employees who run the local Radio Disney affiliate were moved, said station manager Martin Spisak, who lives in San Carlos.
“This is a terrific area for families,” Spisak said during Sunday’s celebration. “We’re the only station for kids and their parents, and it’s going to be a lot of fun to bring that into the community.”
The kids and families who turned out on Sunday to welcome Radio Disney to town were equally thrilled. While one teen held a sign that read, “Radio Disney rocks my socks,” others ran back and forth across the City Hall lawn and competed to win Hannah Montana tickets.
“My girls are just jumping out of their skin for the tickets,” mom Barbara Yates said. Radio Disney plays all day in her daughter Sedona’s room, Yates said. “Even going to sleep, she’ll listen to it.”
City leaders view the station as one of many unique businesses they hope to attract and keep in order to set San Carlos apart from other Peninsula cities.
“So much happens in town that happens in all towns, so when you get a company like this, it’s good,” Mayor Tom Davids said. “We don’t get a lot of tax base from a radio station, but anything that calls attention to San Carlos is a benefit.”
