- A food writer must keep her hard working mouth in tip-top shape, so I visit my beloved dentist, Dr. Stanley Tong, every six months. Just as often his efficient Vietnamese-Chinese technician, Elvie Lam — who I’ve never encountered out of a clear shower cap, goggles, rubber gloves and blue medical gown — tells me to try Anh Hong, a 22-year-old Vietnamese restaurant on Geary near Hyde, for the seven-course beef meal.

Camino is supreme simplicity
- Chez Panisse, the high church of local, seasonal, ingredient-driven cooking, has shepherded many acolytes into their own houses. Now, Russell Moore, a veteran of both the downstairs restaurant and the upstairs cafe, and his front-of-the-house partner, Allison Hopelain, have mounted Camino, their monastery of pure and simple eating.

He immediately called me about Pho Ha Noi, a new Vietnamese noodle house and cafe he discovered.

Refuge: Great pastrami on the Peninsula
- The Belgian beer craze has hit the Peninsula at The Refuge, a deli and pub that features the oddest conglomeration of food and drink I have encountered in 35 years of covering restaurants. French wines, Belgian ales and pastrami sandwiches — the most voluptuous, velvety, meltingly tender, luscious pastrami I’ve ever tasted — all share top billing.

- My tennis teacher Marty — chiseled body, big chin, classic strokes, strictly public court — is picky when it comes to dinner. He likes it fresh, simple and hearty. Ever since I raved about The Pizza Place on Noriega trying to catch my breath during overhead drill, he has been traveling from North Beach almost to Ocean Beach to eat there.

For his small, perfect menu, he has plucked the best preparations from across the region — Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Jerusalem — and throws in a few of his own inventions.
