Clashes continue in northern Lebanon, 3 die
Lebanese security officials say three people have been killed in the second day of sectarian clashes in northern Lebanon. Is there anything new a presidential candidate can say about the absence of peace in the fragile Middle East? When Barack Obama comes to Israel this week, he's going to find plenty of skeptics wondering whether such a foreign policy neophyte has what it takes to finally nail down a solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict.
Syria plans diplomatic relations with Lebanon
Syria's foreign minister said Monday his country was determined to establish diplomatic relations with Lebanon for the first time since the two neighbors gained independence from France more than 60 years ago. The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah has held a funeral for eight guerrillas killed during its 2006 war with Israel. Their bodies were returned in a prisoners swap this week. Defense attorneys raised doubts Friday about the memory of an American Jewish fundraiser at the center of a corruption probe against Ehud Olmert, but did not appear to decisively undermine testimony that threatens to drive the Israeli prime minister from office.
Time for old standbys in black community to be passed by
With any luck, we in the black community are beginning to see the end of the mainstream media’s tired old habit of designating Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson as the leaders and spokespersons for issues of concern to our community. For far too long, these two “media junkies” have used our issues and concerns mostly for their own self-promotion. The two of them, with all of their contradictions and moral baggage, have for far too long been allowed to marginalize and diminish legitimate concerns of black folk. Thousands of Israelis prayed and cried at funerals Thursday for two soldiers whose return from Lebanon in black coffins touched off a nationwide wave of anguish. Critics of Israel's lopsided prisoner exchange with Lebanese guerrillas said Wednesday that such deals only encourage more hostage-taking - a fear underscored by Gaza militants who said the swap proves that kidnapping is the only language Israel understands.
