On Nov. 17, San Diego's newest panda cub's was named at an official ceremony at the San Diego Zoo. The cub was named Yun Zi (Son of Cloud) in honor of his mother, Bai Yun (White Cloud). Following Chinese tradition, Yun Zi was not named until reaching his 100th day of life.
When the San Diego Zoo asked for names, over 6300 suggestions came in from around the world. The top five selections were Fu Sheng (Blissful San Diego), Xiao Long (Little Dragon), Xiong Wei (Extraordinary Bear), Yong Xiang (Eternally Blessed) and Yun Zi (Son of Cloud). Website visitors voted on their favorite of these five names. Over 17,500 votes were cast, with Yun Zi receiving 28 percent of the votes. The runner up, Xiao Long, received 26 percent of the vote.
Yun Zi is Bai Yun's fifth cub. Yun Zi was born on August 5, 2009 and currently weighs a healthy 13 pounds, 2 ounces. At the naming ceremony, Yun Zi's personality was described as "laid back." Yun Zi can be viewed on the Zoo's popular Panda Cam.
San Diego Zoo has been very successful breeding giant pandas. Hua Mei, Bai Yun's first cub, was the first panda born in the United States to survive and return to China. Since returning to China, Hua Mei has given birth to six cubs.
