Places to hide from zombies #1 - Arizona State University

Zombies at an ASU football game

Arizona State University. The college offers 250 academic undergraduate programs and majors. It boasts more than 60,000 students, making it more populated than thousands of cities in the United States. So what would the second most populous university in the nation have to offer in the event of a zombie attack?

Defensively, Arizona State University's (ASU) main campus is one of the worst places to be during an attack. With so many people crammed together into a 631 acre campus, an infection can spread like wildfire. There are no gates surrounding the campus, so any zombie wandering around the streets can step onto the campus whenever it feels like it. This would not be too horrible; however, because of the strictly enforced weapons policy, there is no way for anyone to be prepared to fight an onslaught of the undead. Because of these circumstances, ASU earns a 2.0 in the "Defense" category.

What ASU lacks in defense, they make up for in the "Supplies" category. When a crisis as serious as a zombie attack occurs, a lot of the focus gears toward food, water, and health. Arizona State is abundantly stocked to meet the needs of all three of these. With cafeterias and eateries all over the campus along with drinking fountains stocked in every building, no human could ever go hungry or thirsty at ASU. If anyone were to ever get sick or hurt by anything other than a zombie, (people infected by zombies will have to face the inevitable truth that they will become another bloodthirsty member of the undead) then they could visit the Health Services building to heal themselves. ASU is one of the Valley's best supplied places, earning it a perfect 10.0 in this category.

In order to keep in touch with the events that are occurring, one must have a way to communicate with the outside world. ASU is fully equipped with all the necessary materials to do so. There are thousands of televisions and phones lying around in the dorms just waiting for someone to use them. When a zombie attack occurs, people no longer have complete ownership of their possessions. So if there is ever a Blackberry on the ground, it's okay to pick it up and call for help. Also, the entire campus has wifi access, so news on the attack is only a mouse-click away. Arizona State has great access to mass communication devices, so it receives a 10.0 in the category.

When someone is isolated for an extended amount of time, it is important for them to do anything to keep their sanity. The best way to do this is to stay entertained. Sparky's Den offers all survivors access to an arcade, pool tables, and a bowling alley. The new Barrett Honor's College complex also has a pool table, in addition to many other games. The Student Recreation Center caps off the entertainment area by providing a workout area, numerous gymnasiums and basketball courts, and a full-sized pool with eight lanes for swimming laps. The campus could entertain anyone for weeks straight if they enjoy the offered activities, so the score here is a 9.0.

Lastly, fighting off the undead is a messy and exhausting job. The baths and showers in the residential halls are just the thing to clean off bits of rotten flesh residue. There's also bound to be extra clothes hanging up in the dorms, so tattered clothing is a thing of the past. And with hundreds of beds all over the campus, survivors have a wide selection to choose from. ASU comfortably earns a 10.0 in the "Comfort" category.

So here are the overall ratings:

Defense 2.0
Supplies 10.0
Communication 10.0
Entertainment 9.0
Comfort 10.0
Overall 8.2

Wow. I didn't realize ASU offered so much. I heard there were underground tunnels too on the campus.

    Plan for Zombie Attack:
    1) Take your zombie friend's Car
    2) Go to Mom's and take care of step-dad
    3) Rescue gf
    4) Go to Sparky's Den and wait for the whole thing to blow over
