Map of the human brain (HowStuffWorks.com)
Zombies and brains. We know that to kill one you have to destroy its brain. And we know that some want to try to eat your brain. But have you ever thought about how a zombie's brain works?
Harvard psychiatry professor Dr. Steven C. Schlozman does. A certified genius and horror movie buff, Schlozman uses the undead to lecture his students about the functions of the human brain.
He notes that zombies don't have a fully functioning frontal lobe, which controls impulsivity and behavior, and are thus driven mostly by their amygdala, which controls base emotions, like a crocodile. Their aggression is just the way their brain works. "You can't really be mad at zombies, because that's like being mad at a crocodile," Schlozman says. He also goes on to describe how the brain affects their hunger and the slow, unsteady walk of the undead.
Schlozman also takes a moment to talk about the living brain and why it enjoys zombie movies so much. He says we enjoy looking at something that's human, but not, and watching it have its head blown off. We get to take part in some guilt-free violence and channel our inner crocodile.
