They were everywhere: Staggering down the mall, attacking unsuspecting passersby, riding in rickshaws, and attacking the MallRide bus. Just as the sun set over downtown Denver, the zombies were released, and there was no escaping the gruesome spectacle.
Watching the infestation were horrified tourists Noel and Jerry Hancock from Albuquerque, caught unawares in the midst of the biggest zombie attack in Denver's recorded history. When asked what they thought of the 2009 Denver Zombie Crawl, the couple replied with trepidation, "This is kind of awesome." Yes, the sheer awesome power of so many zombies left me nearly speechless as well.
Victims Bryan DeMarie and Angel Arellanes told me of their harrowing attack, just before they succumbed to the zombie virus. "This girl literally jumped on my back! I tried to run with her for awhile, but then I just fell. They were all over me, scratching and pulling," said DeMarie. Everywhere, innocent victims were being pulled down and ripped apart by the undead masses. "I think I just got punched in the face by a zombie," Arellanes added.
The zombies even went so far as to attack a MallRide bus, trapping its passengers for several minutes until police arrived to escort the bus down the Mall unmolested. The windows of the bus were smeared with bloody handprints from the dozens of zombies who pounded at the glass.
Fortunately for Denver, there were a few brave souls combating the outbreak. The Ghostbusters were on the scene, their car parked in an alley for maximum tactical defense. Doctors Venkman and Stantz offered advice to the fleeing crowd on how to protect themselves. They were last seen shooting several heavily decomposed zombies at close range.
Miraculously, the zombies were all drawn back to the origin of the outbreak at Skyline Park by the sweet strains of live music, performed by Widow's Bane. This charming ensemble of undead musicians performed their "Zombie Death Polka" to thunderous applause and zombie-moans. They will be performing again on November 6th at the B-Side Lounge in Boulder, where there will sure to be another outbreak of the flesh-eating undead.
The few courageous zombie hunters not eaten by the masses of zombies managed to contain and eliminate the attack before midnight. The sun rose on another lively day in the Mile High City, safe from zombies... for now.
