Max Brooks, author of zombie bestseller World War Z announced at Comic-Con this week that Brad Pitt will star in an upcoming film adaptation of World War Z. The Academy Award-nominated actor will play the part of the UN Postwar Commission agent who conducts interviews with survivors in the groundbreaking drama about life after the zombie apocalypse.

Brooks made the announcement to MTV while signing autographs for fans at San Diego's Comic-Con. According to MTV, Pitt's production company, Plan B, purchased the film rights to World War Z in 2007 and Pitt was such a fan of the book (and the zombie genre) he decided to take on the leading role himself.

Marc Forester (Quantum of Solace, Monster's Ball) is slated to direct the film adaptation of Brooks's novel, and Matthew Michael Carnahan (Lions For Lambs, The Kingdom) is rewriting the screenplay originally written by J. Michael Straczynski. The film is currently scheduled for a summer, 2012 release, Brooks told MTV. Brooks also announced that Paramount Pictures has optioned the film rights to his other two books, The Zombie Survival Guide and graphic novel Recorded Attacks.

You can purchase all three of Max Brooks's books --The Zombie Survival Guide, World War Z, and Recorded Attacks-- at the Tattered Cover Bookstore on the 16th Street Mall in downtown Denver.

I have heard nothing but great things about the book; I need to finally track down a copy before the movie comes out!

I'm a fan of the books – yeah, I know, big surprise – but was a little lukewarm on Pitt even given his obvious respect for Brooks. The concept art, however, does please me. I'll reserve judgment at this early stage of the game, although I'd much prefer to see Pitt as a zombie.

Have'nt read Z - BUT have read 'The Zhombie Conspiracy' & The Zhombie Connection' VERRRRY different than the endlessly rehashed slash/gore Dawn of the Dead concept. These are into multiple time lines/multiple selves & planets -very colorful! Rumor has it a 3rd book in the works - all in consideration for what would be an incredible film! Can't wait!!!
