2009 Denver Zombie Crawl a deadly success

If you judge success based on swarms of unruly zombies staggering through busy city streets, frightening tourists and confusing cab drivers, then the 2009 Denver Zombie Crawl was a huge success.

Event organizer Christy Kruzick credited much of the Zombie Crawl's success to this year's huge volunteer staff. The volunteers applied zombie makeup, kept the music going, organized the charity drive, and wrangled thousands of participating zombies. Kruzick also said that next year the Zombie Crawl will be more involved with charity from the beginning. "Bring a can of food for the Food Bank to get in, that's how we want it to work next time," she said.

Daniel Newman, founder of the Denver Zombie Crawl, was inspired by San Francisco's Zombie Crawl, four years ago. As the annual Crawl has grown, Newman has had to acquire permits from the Denver police. There is an ultimate goal for the Denver Zombie Crawl, according to Newman. "In New York City every year they have this amazing Halloween parade. Literally a million people show up. I want our Zombie Crawl to be like that."

October 24th's event made that goal possible in the future, with an estimated 3,000 zombies in attendance. No doubt there will be even more next year.

Besides the legions of the undead, the Zombie Crawl also hosted several brave and talented photographers, documenting the chaos. Click through the slideshow to see some of these photographers' best work from the zombie outbreak.
