The University of Dayton Flyers staged a furious comback in the second half of Friday's game against Villanova, but ultimately fell 71-65 in the second round of the O'Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip Off. After trailing by 18 with just over fourteen minutes left, it looked as though Dayton would turn their sights to today's consolation game. Coach Brian Gregory and the Flyers had other ideas, though, as they climbed to within 2 at the 2:23 mark. Down the stretch, the Wildcats were too much to overcome, and Dayton can now focus their full attention on Kansas State today at 5:30.
Kansas State is a team that has not had any trouble finding their offense as they are averaging 82.0 points per game so far this season. The key for Dayton will be to limit the turnovers that have plagued them through the first two games, and continue to leverage the strong play they have been getting off the bench.
After being somewhat shell-shocked by the Wildcats of Villanova, the Flyers responded well and fought with the kind of heart you have come to expect out of a Dayton basketball team. While their efforts came up short, a victory today would leave them in third place in this pre-season tournament, and well positioned for their trip back north to start the rest of the season.
Puerto Rico is a great place to visit, but we are looking forward to having the Flyers back in the friendly confines of UD Arena. Their home opener is Saturday, November 28th versus the Towson University Tigers. That gives you a couple of days to shake off your Tryptophan-induced stupor, and get out to support the Flyers. You can purchase tickets at the Dayton Flyers website.
