Bishops criticize same-sex unions

Bishops of the Roman Catholic Church announced that the definition of marriage is the union between a man and a woman, and that sex is solely for reproduction. A letter was released in Baltimore on Tuesday by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, saying they are bothered by the increasing number of people that believe marriage is a private matter instead of being a crucial issue to making a healthier society.
The published letter continued by explaining how same-sex unions would “damage the common good and would ignore the proper role of husbands and wives.”
The bishops mentioned are clearly against gay marriage. Isn’t the Roman Catholic religion, along with every other religion, supposed to be caring and inviting towards others? I think so. Yes, the Bible states that marriage is between a man and a woman, but doesn’t God love everyone?
Turning homosexuals away from the alter is complete discrimination. There are laws prohibiting judgment in the workplace and elsewhere based on race, creed, religion, gender, disability and natural origin. When is this law going to come into effect when it comes to the union of two people?
It is disappointing living in a state where two men or two women cannot marry each other just because they are in love with someone of the same gender. My question to the bishops is: How will gay marriage affect citizens of the United States personally? My answer: It won’t. Minnesota, along with religions around the country, need to get in gear and accept the fact that homosexuality is not a sin. Let everyone have equal rights.

    Homosexuality is a Sin!
1 Corinthians 6: 9-10 - "9 or do you not know that the unrighteous [1] will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, [2] 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God."
Just as we should not condone Stealing, Lying, Adultery, Fornication or Murder; we do not want to give approval to deviant Homosexual behavior. Romans 1:32 - "32 though they know God's decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them."

You need to realize that the Holy Bible is the Authority! It has stood against all attacks and has proved itself to be without any error. As such, its message is: When you die you will stand before GOD ALMIGHTY. He will judge you on thought, word, and deed. If you have ever told a lie, stolen, used GOD’s name in vain, or looked with lust (see Matthew 5:28); You will be guilty of breaking GOD’s commandments.
Because GOD is JUST and LOVING, he must punish sin. The punishment for those guilty of sin is clear, eternity in HELL!
GOD, who is rich in MERCY, provided one way of escape.
2000 years ago, GOD came to earth in the person of Jesus Christ. He lived the sinless life you and I could not. He suffered a horrible, brutal death on the cross that we deserved, in our place. Shedding his innocent blood, as propitiation. You broke GOD’s Laws, but Christ paid your fine. Now GOD can justly let you go free. You need to Repent, and Believe. That is, to humble yourself and admit that GOD is rig

GOD is right, turn from your sins and put you trust in Jesus Christ alone to save you. Then read your Bible everyday and obey what you read. GOD will grant you the gift of eternal life.

Thank you for posting this, Ms. Friedman.

@JonPaul. You need to realize that not everyone believes in the Bible or wants to live under YOUR religious laws. How would you feel if you lived in a majority Muslim neighborhood and they voted to pass a law that required you to turn to Mecca everyday at sunset?

We have separation of church and state for a reason.

I think there are many points on this whole issue. First where was the Church on the divorce rate? Why has the church not pushed for a law to outlaw divorce and demand that those who do get divorced can not get married again?

A big part of this whole debate is the lack of seperation between church and State. Some just do not get it. Just because you disagree with someone does not mean you get to treat them as second class citizens. Christians are the majority right now but that will not be the case in the future. They need to ask if they want to be treated when they become a minority as they have treated another minority right now.

Personally I don't give a damn if a bible thumper doesn't want me to get married to the person of my choice. The religious bigots are a fake entity in the marriage equality debate, and it doesn't have anything to do with them. Marriage is a civil contract issued by the state, and nothing more.

I hate religious fascists for throwing themselves in the way of my liberties, and I hate them for voting away my right to get married!

    @ JonPaul

How about use quotes from a hundred year old bible. Homosexuality is not in the bible, hence the word was not created until 1800's. Nice try. Failure.

So the christian god hates gays. So what. There is over 4300 religions in the world, half of which support homosexuality.

The article is not well thought through. Most of the responses are not well thought through. The Bishops did not announce that sexual union is solely for reproduction. Sexual union must be open to reproduction, but the unitive end of sexual union is also of primary importance. That God loves everyone can not possibly mean that God wills any and all behaviors. Clearly homosexual behavior is contrary to the ends for which humans possess their genital powers. Moreover many people have gotten the notion that discrimination is always bad. On the contrary, discrimination is necessary to do good and avoid evil. Legitimizing homosexual unions will affect the culture in America. After the legitimization of such unions, how will the state be in any legal position to deny any number of other unions? What grounds might there be to deny two brothers the right to marry each other? Two sisters? A mother and daughter of age, a father and adult son? What grounds to deny three people unions, etc?

First of all....JonPaul is scary. thank goodness he is in a very minute minority opinion. There is no reason at all that everyone who is in love shouldn't have the opportunity to marry, male/female, female/female, male/male. Wouldn't any god of any religion want all human beings to be happy, good citizens of the earth? Why do 'real Christians', or so they think, always have to try and impose their beliefs on others? I find this to be incredibly offensive and a non-loving attitude. If you don't like gay marriage and aren't gay, then mind your own business. Excellent article Sarah!

Shame on you JonPaul...your fear of homosexuality cannot be hidden behind the rehetoric you write. Please do not lecture to the masses on your interpretation of the bible.

I am a Christian.. and I totally agree with you, Sarah. JONPAUL... have you read in the Bible where it also says that if you child disobeys you, you should kill them? Sorry I don't have the verse but believe me it's there. Do you think homosexuals chose a life where they have to hide their feelings until they are ready to come out? Homosexuals are not sinners and they should have every right that we do. Watch the following movies please: Prayers for Bobby and For the Bible Tells me so... if you dare look at the other side.

I can't control what other people think or believe. I do question why people continue to support organizations like the Roman Catholic Church when they don't accept their teachings. Why not join the Lutheran Church, who does accept homosexuals and lesbians in a committed relationship as their Pastors and members? Does the conditioning from Parents and Priests run so strong that you believe that you will burn in hell if you leave the One True Church?

In response to Harris' comment: I agree with much of your comment; however, ALL Christians do not impose their thoughts on others. I am a Christian and believe in gay rights. I find your comment very judgemental. Plz think before you write something including "ALL" of a particular group.
