Lou Dobbs quits CNN: Is Senator Dobbs from New Jersey next?

CNN host Lou Dobbs made a surprise announcement on his program on Wednesday that he was resigning effective immediately.  Dobbs had been with the network since its inception, with only a two year hiatus.  Dobbs is best known for his view on illegal immigration and is a leading spokesman against the lack of border control in the United States.

Just last month, Dobbs told his audience, on both radio and television, that his home in Wantage, NJ, was the target of a bullet that he believes was the result of his outspokenness.

Chatter about Dobbs jumping ship to join Fox News or Fox Business have been squashed by the News Corp. networks, so it remains to be seen if Dobbs will wind up on TV anytime soon.  There has been no word if this decision affects his afternoon radio show.

So how does US Senator from New Jersey Lou Dobbs sound instead?

As can be seen In the video [BELOW] or read in the transcript, Dobbs notes that he has come to this decision over the last six months due to the "strong winds of change" that are sweeping across the country.  "And some leaders in media, and in politics and business have been urging me to go beyond the role at CNN and to engage in constructive problem solving as well as to contribute positively to the great understanding of the issues of our day and to continue to do so in the most honest and direct language possible," Dobbs said.

Undoubtedly, running for public office is something that would "go beyond" a television program.  It may result in the problem solving that Dobbs says he has been urged to undertake by people who would likely be serious donors to a future campaign.  Dobbs, a New Jersey resident, was once rumored to be running for governor this year.  Republican Chris Christie defeated incumbent Democrat Jon Corzine in last Tuesday's election.

But now, the timing for a run would be perfect, as US Senator Bob Menendez is facing re-election in 2012.  Menendez, a first-term senator, was even quoted in the Associated Press story regarding Dobbs' exit as saying that CNN made an "addition by subtraction."

The election would be a dream scenario for political junkies, as Menendez and Dobbs are some of the most outspoken critics of each other.

With that possibility perhaps being one of Dobbs' many options, the rest of his statement reads like a campaign kickoff.  Dobbs notes what he sees as the top issues: "the growth of our middle-class, the creation of more jobs, health care, immigration policy, the environment, climate change, and our military involvement, of course, in Afghanistan and Iraq."

He adds that there is a need to "overcome the lack of true representation in Washington, D.C."  What better way to solve this problem than by Dobbs entering the fray himself?

With Christie's big win, there is no doubt that Republicans and conservatives may once again eye New Jersey as a state where some ground may be gained.

Do you think Dobbs will run?  Would he have a chance of defeating Bob Menendez?

Lou Dobbs for Senator has a great sound to it.
Maybe finally we will get real representation in New Jersey and not the same old democratic corrupt political machine that has proven to be a failure each and every year.

It would be great to see Dobbs run because he has the name recognition and probably the money to beat Menendez. Does anyone think the non-Fox news networks push out people with strongly held, unPC views? Tolerance of such views seems to be the reason Fox is a "right wing" network.

It would be a capital idea if Lou Dobbs were a senator. At least we could have someone in the Senate looking out for the interest of the American people. As far as Menendez is concerned, I never believed that HE chose not to run for the senate seat so that Corzine could run instead. Corzine had the bucks for the campaign, and I am sure that a deal was made with Menendez. We of course know the outcome of that deal. I believe that being a U.S. Senator is more prestigious and important than being a governor.

Should Lou Dobbs run for the U.S. Senate, he has my vote. We need an American to look out for the American interest!!

2012 is quite a ways away, and Mr. Dobbs has much in his background which the National Socialist Party (does anybody still bother to call 'em "Democrat" anymore?) stalwarts will try to leverage against him.

Given the massive Stupidity Quotient in the overpopulated counties of North Jersey, I doubt that Mr. Dobbs has a hound's chance in hell of dislodging the incumbent "Malevolent Jobholder" masquerading as a representative of the people of the Garden State in the U.S. Senate.
