It's official: The Twilight Saga: New Moon is poised to break records. Last night's midnight premiere grossed over $26 million, breaking any midnight box office record. The film showed at over 3,500 screens at 12:01am. Box office experts are now predicting that this weekend's total will earn the film around $105 million.
The current record holder for highest earnings in a single day is The Dark Knight with over $67 million. Can New Moon beat that? It's certainly a possibility. Presales have indicated that most shows for Friday were soldout. It is, however, unlikely that the film will earn more than the $158 million that The Dark Knight grossed during its opening weekend. One thing is an absolute certainty: New Moon will be a box office success. With plenty of fans guaranteeing repeat visits to the theater over the coming weeks, it will be very interesting to see what the final haul this movie makes.
Meanwhile, the cast of New Moon gathered for a special screening in New York City last night. Hosted by The Cinema Society and D&G, the event was attended by numerous celebrities such as Howard Stern and his family as well as Taylor Momsen from 'Gossip Girl.' Also on hand were Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Kristen Stewart, Ashley Greene, Nikki Reed, and Kellan Lutz.
